This House believes that advertising is harmful

Advertising has grown to be an industry worth many billions of dollars across the world. Online advertising alone is believed to be worth $24 billion a year. Almost all public space has some advertisements in sight and all forms of media, from newspapers to the cinema, are also filled with adverts. Whilst this helps companies sell their products, and helps consumers to learn what is on offer, many believe that this huge amount of advertising can be harmful. It may make people want too much, or things that they cannot have, or it might make them feel inadequate when they don't have something. Research shows that children can be particularly open to these kinds of risk.

Has Apple Lost its Cool?

Background and context: Apple has had a very turbulent history, knowing extreme lows and highs. No longer than 20 years ago, the company was near-bankrupt. And at the end of 2012, the company made a quarterly profit of 13,1 billion U.S. Dollars through selling iPods, iPhones and iPads, which is ranked second highest ever achieved by an American organisation. But despite the record profit-making, investors have pulled 50 billion U.S. Dollars. Speculations are circling that Apple is not as innovative as it once was. Besides the investors pulling funds, competing brands are gaining territory. Windows has come back with new refreshing campaigns and mobile technology. Samsung is delivering cutting-edge technology just the same.  Could it be that Apple has reached its highest point and is on its decline again? Could it be that the brand is not as innovative and cutting-edge anymore but has become more mainstream? Debate question: Apple is no longer creative, innovative and perceived as cool; will it surprise us with a new revolutionary device or is it over and done?

Public institutions have many side benefits. For one thing they may purposely run at a loss. They're not out for profit. They may purposely run at a loss because of the side benefits. So, for example if a public steel industry runs at a loss it's providing cheap steel to other industries. Maybe that's a good thing. Public institutions can have a counter cyclic property. So that means that they can maintain employment in periods of recession, which increases demand, which helps you to get out of recession. Private companies can't do that in a recession. Money vs. Labor Credits

With the gold standard currency, the currency is basicly valued by gold and the United States used this up untill the 1970's. This system is like what we use now in a way.   However, labor credits are more interesting... Say you work for 8 hours. You get 8 labor credits. You buy a chair that took someone 2 hours to make, it costs two labor credits. It is a bit more complex than this but it is a different way to give money value other than gold or just giving it value like we do today...

Can trickle-down economics work?

Trickle-down economics hasn't worked in the U.S. so far. Is that because we just haven't gotten it right yet, or is the concept fundamentally flawed?
