Lil Wayne Tramples American Flag: Offensive or No Big Deal?

Lil Wayne is no stranger to controversy, but this time the rapper's latest stunt has critics accusing him of being "un-American." According to TMZ, Lil Wayne and his entourage were filming his new song “God Bless Amerika” in New Orleans when Wayne performed what many call an unpatriotic act. The introduction of the video shows Wayne rapping in front of an American flag used as a backdrop, but as the video goes on, the banner is dropped to the ground, and he continues rapping and walking all over the Red, White and Blue. Critics think this is a belated lash-out directed at the way the American government handled efforts in aiding the survivors of Hurricane Katrina (the video was shot in New Orleans), but Wayne denies this is the case.In a statement posted on his Facebook Wayne insists, "It was never my intention to desecrate the flag of the United States of America. I was shooting a video for a song....The clip that surfaced on the Internet was a camera trick clip that revealed that behind the American Flag was the Hoods of America." Apparently in the final video after the flag drops you won't be able to see that it's on the ground.

"Curb Your Enthusiasm" actor and comedian Jeff Garlin was arrested over the weekend in the alleged smashing of another motorist’s windows during a fight over a parking space, LAPD officials said. The 51-year-old actor was booked on suspicion of felony vandalism Saturday afternoon after the parking-space spat allegedly turned violent in Studio City. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department records show Garlin is out on $20,000 bail. He has an initial court appearance scheduled for July 11. Garlin plays the manager of "Seinfeld" co-creator Larry David on the successful HBO show. He also appeared in several episodes of “Arrested Development.”

Is Paris Jackson Right in Hating Justin Bieber?

Paris Jackson, like any person in their right mind, is not a fan of Justin Bieber. However, her reasons have nothing to do with his music. The daughter of the late Michael Jackson feels that Bieber is a terrible role model for young girls. Her anger sparked after some of Bieber's female fans tweeted about cutting themselves as an expression of love for the singer.  Rather than speak up against the harsh reality of cutting, Bieber stayed silent. Jackson, who is currently getting treatment at the UCLA Medical Center for cutting herself, found this silence to be disgraceful. She is not afraid to express her hatred for the pop singer, but is she over-reacting? As much as I hate to defend Bieber, I do see how responding to millions of fan girls on Twitter can be a lot of work. Is it really his job to make sure his fans do not harm themselves for him? Bieber never advocated they do it in the first place, and as of now it hasn't actually been done. Is Paris Jackson exaggerating Bieber's villainy? Then again, it wouldn't take too much time out of Bieber's day to tweet a simple sincere message to his young fans that cutting is a serious issue and should not be taken lightly. So perhaps Paris Jackson isn't over-reacting at all. What do you think?

So obviously there's no arguing taste. Some people might prefer to listen to the sound of sheet metal tearing and that's their personal preference and there's nothing we can really say or do to change that. So lets not talk taste, lets talk objective merit. has music been improving over time in this regard? Consider prehistoric music: some primitive humans banging on leather drums in a cave somewhere Consider music in early history: instruments built out of poor materials and improperly formed and tuned Consider music in the middle ages: isolated composers working primarily under the influence of the church Consider modern genres: genres like Jazz couldn't have come to exist if it wasn't for the unification of two different styles of music, something that could only happen once those genres were allowed to form, develop, and interact with one another over time. Consider modern music: the use of the computer in modern production has completely changed the way we make music. We can now master music to sound better than it ever did in the past, and we can literally make any sound we want in music. We are no longer limited by the restrictions of physical instruments; you can put the exact sound you want in your music and not have to settle for the next best thing you could recreate on an instrument. Now apply my argument to other subjects. You might prefer the way old missions the church built in California in the 1800s look to the way the Empire State building looks (a matter of taste), but would you really argue that Mission San Juan Bautista has better objective architecture than the Empire State building? Of course not. Our methods of building stuff have improved over the years. You might prefer the way an old Ford Model-T looks to body style of a Bugatti Veyron (a matter of taste), but would you really argue that the T is a better car, objectively speaking, than the Veyron?
