U.S. should put an end to war on drugs, legalize pot?

Consider this editorial, written by the editorial board of The Denver Post: "President Barack Obama has requested more than $14 billion to fund the drug war at the federal level in 2009. State and local enforcement costs drive that figure far higher. Year after year, a few hundred thousand people end up in court and prison as a result of drug crimes. Our overcrowded prisons are just one reason to take another look at some of our drug laws. Granted, there are still many dangerous drugs out there. Highly addictive drugs like methamphetamine or crack cocaine swept through our nation's cities and suburbs and rural communities like epidemics. But legions of studies have shown that marijuana isn't addictive. And as recent U.S. presidents have shown, use of the drug, even when inhaled, doesn't in and of itself ruin a person's chance at achieving full and productive lives. Yes, pot users face risks as potentially as devastating as other drugs. So do drinkers of wine and beer."

A week ago, I'd have disagreed. A common response is that legalizing these drugs will end the underground market, which will lower the prices - reducing associated crime. Soldiers during the Vietnam War were heavily addicted to some of these drugs. They say that the cause of the addiction was the cheap and widespread availability in Vietnam and neighboring countries. Such drugs have well-known side-effects. Many will argue that people have a right to do with their body what they will - but these drugs take over the mind, which make users a danger to others. A lawyer could easily argue that, seeing how the drug was legal and his client was well within his rights to use such a dangerous substance, the client was not guilty - indeed, that the law is at fault. Others argue about taxes - how it will raise revenue. My response is this: Does it really matter about the money? When did the American people sell their souls and become so greedy as to accept such a monstrosity.

Should Drugs be legal or illegal

So, people are going to do drugs anyway: Why shouldn't they be legal? Too much money is spent on trying to contain it. Too many lives are wasted trying to sell and buy them. To much is wasted for these drugs. To many people are housed in our prison system for these drugs. The list is long, but there are some cons to drugs obviously. So, do the pros to legalize drugs in general out wiegh the cons? 

Why do many people find the act of other people doing drugs to be wrong?

I am not talking about matters of law here, though that could play a part. Why, even when it is proven scientifically harmless to you, do people see a person altering their own consciousness to be wrong? The WHO has just produced a report that shows moderate cocaine use to not be a detriment to the health of the user. Marijuana is so non-toxic it's LD 5.0 is more thc than you could ever get into your body at once. Hallucinogens have shown to produce very positive mental effects on people including a study that showed how they unwire addiction in the brain. Most of the answers I get are overprotective and don't take into account the fact that the percentage of the population that becomes addicted to something is usually around a constant percentage and is completely outweighed by those who use responsibly. So tell me, why is it wrong for a person to alter their mind or body with an outside substance?

The Constitutionality of the War on Drugs (Please Read)

In the year 1919, through an amendment to the Constitution, alcohol was banned (ie. Prohibition). The ban was lifted in 1933 through another amendment. What I ask you is this: if banning anything is constitutionally within the jurisdiction of the federal government, then why did it take an entire amendment to the constitution to make the ban on alcohol? There is nothing in the Constitution which either allows or disallows the federal government to have any say over such drugs as marijuana, therefore, as per the 10th Amendment, it is an issue either for the states or for the people - not the feds. Thus, I argue that the constitution is being ignored in this War on Drugs, and the politicians of circa 1919 knew that the only way a ban on alcohol would live up to constitutional scrutiny was for an amendment to be made to the constitution - why are currently illegal drugs any different?

Should AIDS drugs be made cheaper for developing countries?

  The majority of the world's HIV/AIDS cases are in Africa. Should the issue of affordability of AIDS drugs go forward? Some African nations ignore intellectual property rights and produce cheap drugs unless companies argee to lower the price of thier product in order to accommodate the poor markets. Do drug companies have the right to make immense profit despite the pain and suffering of others whether poor nations can afford to pay the costs?

Why I am against drugs/alcohol and cigerettes

If you look at my profile, it says that I am a libertarian. How come a libertarian is against drugs and alcohol and other dangerous stuff? I live in a country, where taxes are extremely high. This month for example. I am a 17 year old student, and still 30% of my payment goes to pay taxes.  30% will not sound very much to many of you. But like I said, I am a student - I can only work at night, and I have to buy expensive books. In average, I get 700 bucks a month. 30% of that is about 230. Which means I get to keep less than 500 bucks. With these I have to buy my really expensive books in school. So now I wonder, those 230 bucks that are missing in my payment, where do they go ?   They go to 'help' drugaholics and alcoholics pay their own bills. I have already trouble with paying mine. But because of some pimp, who's to high to get a job, I HAVE TO PAY HIS or HERS RENT AND FOOD. Because someone is to drunk to pay for gas and electrisity, I .. I with my lazy ass payment, have to pay it for him/her. Because of some smoker, who've been smoking for 50 years and then got lung cancer, can't pay his lung transplant. I have to pay it for him/her   Every month, the government take 30% of my payment, to support these lazy cows, who can't figure out, that DRUGS AND ALCOHOL ARE ACTUALLY REALLY BAD FOR YOU. It makes some of you addicted, therefore unable to have a job - ergo I have to pay your stupid bills. You call it freedom, I call it stupidity. A big percentage of those who are addicted to all kinds of drugs, start when they're really young. That is why I think there should be an age limit.   So that's why I am against drugs and stuff, so now to why I am a libertarian.   Like I already said like a thousand times, I live in a country where the taxes are very .. extremely high. 30% for me, 60% for my dad.. 70% is the highest I think. I am a libertarian, because I think this is stupid. It is stupid that I have to pay other bills, because someone can't get a job for some reason. It is stupid that I can't decide for myself, where my money goes to.   Thanks for taking your time reading this, I wrote this because many people mention this particular thing when I dispute what people call 'freedom'.
