I THINK
Cramming is the process of putting a specific amount of information in your short term memory. If you manage some how to pass your test, it is unlikely you will remember the information the next day assuming you still remember it after the test. It doesn't help you at all if your teacher asks you a question you didn't study for. Understanding puts the information in your long term memory where you can potentially find other uses for it the rest of your life. You will be able to use that information at times to solve problems that would now seem to be completely unrelated to what you are currently learning. So, cramming might get you an "A" today, understanding will get you an "A" in life.
I don't believe in short term learning.
