Is product placement in film offensive? http://www.createdebate.com/debate/show/Is_product_placement_in_film_offensive#arg7562 I'd much rather watch product placement then watch a 'clean' movie with a bunch of commercials at the beginning. Goes double for TV.

Are you willing to pay $15 to check one piece of luggage? http://www.createdebate.com/debate/show/Are_you_willing_to_pay_$15_to_check_one_piece_of_luggage#arg7560 I'd pay to minimize the hassle going through security. It's bad enough with a laptop.

Where should I go to get my MBA? http://www.createdebate.com/debate/show/Where_should_I_go_to_get_my_MBA#arg6093 Go to a school based on where you want to work. Local schools tend to have local alumni, and outside of the top tier that matters more then 'rank'.

Do large bodies of people have better collective judgement then individuals? http://www.createdebate.com/debate/show/Do_large_bodies_of_people_have_better_collective_judgement_then_individuals#arg6086 One of the differences between collective judgment and that of an individual is that the collective decision need not reflect a single cohesive metric. Angels will make decisions based on what is important to angels and devils will make decisions based on what is important to devils.

Dictating a metric is equivalent to dictating an outcome.

Do large bodies of people have better collective judgement then individuals? http://www.createdebate.com/debate/show/Do_large_bodies_of_people_have_better_collective_judgement_then_individuals#arg6079 The method of "aggregation" matters. You are implying an aggregation based on consensus- everyone goes into a room and talks it through until they reach something everyone can agree to. That is not the only possibility however.

Voting, particularly anonymous voting distances the decision from the sway of group dynamics and permits individuality while still creating a group decision. Stock markets work the same way.

What do you think about the proposed "gas tax holiday" in the news? http://www.createdebate.com/debate/show/What_do_you_think_about_the_proposed_gas_tax_holiday_in_the_news#arg3823 "For one thing, this gas tax holiday doesn't seem all that popular. Hillary endorsed it an ended up with a worse run in Indiana than expected."

That's an argument that McCain and Clinton miscalculated the public's response to the holiday plan. As I indicated previously, that's not a hard argument to make and polling data can prove or disprove it. I don't know of any such polls but would like to see them. Anyone?

Clinton's recent decline in relative popularity is not evidence by itself. It could be due to any number of factors, and I'd point out that there has been no appreciable decline McCain's popularity despite his support for a similar policy.

With respect to whether majorities tend to be correct or not, I feel that question is significant and different enough from the gas tax as to warrant it's own debate.

What do you think about the proposed "gas tax holiday" in the news? http://www.createdebate.com/debate/show/What_do_you_think_about_the_proposed_gas_tax_holiday_in_the_news#arg3556 If the gas tax holiday is bad, then either politicians are wrong and voters don't really want it and won't vote for them because of it or voters are wrong and want the holiday even though it is bad for them.

It's easy to say the politicians are wrong, miscalculations happen and the truth will out in the polling numbers. But to say that masses of voters are wrong about their own interests ought to be harder, to go against them is by definition to say you know better then they do what is good for them.

That's not to say that large numbers of people are never wrong, it does happen (real estate bubble, internet bubble, 2004 presidential election). I think it just doesn't happen that often and claims of such shouldn't be thrown around lightly.

What features should be added to CreateDebate? http://www.createdebate.com/debate/show/What_features_should_be_added_to_CreateDebate#arg3390 I'd like the ability to add a "Troll" icon or a "Devil's Advocate" icon, something visual you could tag on your own argument to indicate whether you believed what you were saying. Maybe even emoticons?

Should the President be using domestic legal powers reserved for times of war? http://www.createdebate.com/debate/show/Is_it_appropriate_now_for_the_President_to_use_legal_powers_reserved_for_times_of_war#arg3271 No. The principal stated justification for there use has been the "war on terrorism". That war will almost certainly exceed the lifespan of the average reader of this argument. Allowing it as justification would in effect grant powers previously limited to national emergency and war time to the President on a permanent basis. Such a grant is incompatible with any notion of the rule of law based on our Constitution.

What features should be added to CreateDebate? http://www.createdebate.com/debate/show/What_features_should_be_added_to_CreateDebate#arg3107 Related to the idea of new formats, how about a trial/jury system? The moderator invites two members to argue an issue. Argument rights are restricted to those two, though the public can view them. Posting of arguments could be structured: One side goes first and then the other side responds, both subject to some kind of time limit to post (say 24 hours). After a preset number of rounds the debate opens to questions from the "jury", consisting of either the public or a set of pre-registered members.

Formalizing the debate restricts participation somewhat, but I think it would improve the quality. It makes things less whimsical and more deliberate.

What are the best arguments against creationism? http://www.createdebate.com/debate/show/What_are_the_best_arguments_against_creationism#arg2895 The most easily refuted creationist claim is the one about odds, where they argue the odds of the universe, the planet, and our species developing as they did are so remote that they cannot possibly be a product of chance.

It's a bunky argument because it mixes pre and post fact statistics. It's like saying the odds of any specific combination being drawn in Powerball are 1 in 1,000,000,000,000 therefore no number will be drawn.
