The complexities behind the origin of such a culture and the conditions under which it exists are not that important to me. What I care about is that selfishness is not an unsolvable problem. I see the Japanese way of thinking kind of like an "altruistic selfishness", as in, they see the advantages for themselves in being altruistic. (Richard Dawkins discusses something like that in "Nice Guys Finish First")

Are they capitalist? Yes, but I guess it's more due to the lack of a better system at the moment, than to an inescapable selfish nature. For me, using the selfish nature argument to back up government and capitalism simply doesn't follow. People are better than that... Maybe we could make them see it...

But hey, I've never been to the US... Maybe if I someday become in contact with hardcore peeps, I might end up losing my faith in our species ;P I guess we've seen very different things in our lives, and are talking about totally different things...

I grew up in Brasil, and by the way you talk about selfishness, I feel like things there work pretty similarly to the US. Each man by himself, and trying to gain as much as possible in every situation.

I've been living in Japan for the past 4 years, and since the moment I got here, Japanese people have been a mystery to me. I usually say that, when a foreigner fully understands the Japanese culture, he will probably reach nirvana. I'm not there yet, but for sure my perspective has changed. I don't know how familiar you are with the subject, but Japanese people are known for putting their society before themselves. It's far from perfect, the problems which come out of that are numerous. But what came to surprise me, and eventually give me hope, is the fact that it happens: human beings can be taught to care about the collective good.

Have you ever been abroad and had any long term contact with other cultures? Or do you base all your opinions about the human race on the way you were raised and the people you see around you?

Don't mean to offend you or anything, I'd be thinking the same about selfishness and greed if I had never been to Asia or some muslim countries...

No, I'm not bothered by Ron Paul's positions at all.

He has shown (by his well documented constitutional stance) that he will not allow his personal beliefs to compromise the just and proper application of the Constitution.

Hm, that is weird. I just tested that URL and it worked for me. After the URL is parsed, the return code is checked to make sure the server is responsive. There is a chance that a bad return code was sent back in that instance for some reason.

Not a problem. Personally, I treat allies more as "people to invite to my debates" rather than as "people I'll support." Of course, I do a quick check before I add them to make sure that I'm not "allying" someone I completely disagree with. =]
