1984: Are text language and emojis harming or improving language?
Purists would argue that text language is ruining the use of proper grammar, punctuation, correct spelling and sentence structure. On the other side of the coin with text language we may be witnessing the natural evolution, and a more efficient form of written communication. For instance, why is the word abbreviation so long and have two bs? Why are there two ms and two ss in the word commission? 1

Purpose of language is expressing oneself. Better language is better communication of ideas and feelings. Now that it seems simple, I'd say 'text-language' and emojis are improving language between those that frequently use and are used to using them, understand them. Whereas emojis and abbreviations harm communication between those that do not understand it. Given it tends to be the younger generation that has generally adopted this, there will be or has been a time at which it will become a net benefit to language to learn and use emojis and text language over not using them. A nice thing about this change is the universality of emojis. Even lol and maybe some others have some meaning in other countries, even when they don't even use latin derived alphabets However, nobody forces you to use them. You could ask the same question of the english language in the context of chinese. Discuss. 1

I don't believe so-called text language and emojis are improving language because although language is meant to express one's ideas, it's meant to express and communicate ideas to others and for said others to understand prior-mentioned ideas. This is why I only use certain acronyms with certain people because sending emojis to someone who doesn't understand the meaning of the emoji would be like someone writing in Chinese and showing it to a dog. 1

I don't believe that they don't hurt language but it does leave the reader on a cliffhanger because there is no specific feelings being told. I believe that it's just an improper and informal way of speaking to others. Giving a reaction or emoji is simply not enough for something to be said. It can also be misinterpreted as well so i feel as if emojis are just unnecessary 1

Text language could impair language if they don't have a strong foundation/understanding of speech to begin with. Now, if someone is already efficient with a language, text talk/emojis could help improve creativity. This may allow the writer to get their ideas down quick even if they aren't that fast at writing. one day, i was just playing my games, when i heard weird sounds coming from my parents room, i then heard a scream of pain so i decide to go help , i opened the door, and...saw my dad with a another woman, while she was whiping him, and he look like he was enjoying it, i closed the door, and decided to prevent it never happened |
