A Personal Preference: Burial or Cremation

In a story from my local newspaper I found a story telling us of a man who had an impeccable last will and testament.  Everything was taken care of down to the last i dotted and the last t crossed.  The only think the man forgot to mention was his preference of interment!  He never said if burial would suffice or if cremation would suit him.  Now there's a lawsuit which has stretched out over two months by the family which seems to be split down the middle and who has the last say on this.  So please, tell us which you would rather have for yourself and don't forget to put it in your will.  For all intents and purposes being interred in a mausoleum would be the same as burial.

I guess I'm a bit traditional when it comes to this but not having the funds for a mausoleum, I think I'd like to be buried next to my Mom. There is room since it is a double plot and no one else is going to use it anyway. Creamation gives me the creeps and I am afraid of fire anyway. One could agrue what the difference is since I'll be dead but I'm making these decisions while I am still alive so next to Mom it is!

I'd pick burial, if they ever develop the technology to bring people back from the dead or if there is something after death(not likely) then it will be handy to have my brain intact.

I'd choose a burial for two reasons-

1) A casket seems to be a very traditional place for a body to lie forever.

2) Burning a body is desecrating it, and I don't want my body being desecrated.

My first choice would be to donate my body to science, but since I must choose burial or cremation, I choose to be buried with a selection of objects:

1. A pull-string to ring a bell above ground.

2. A cell phone.

3. A flashlight.

4. Bottled water.

As you can see, I'm a bit afraid of being presumed dead and waking up in a box six feet underground.

MY preference would be cremation because I consider a burial a waste of money and LAND.

However, I'm leaving it up to my husband, or parents, or children... depends when I die and who I want to make the decision. Knowing my husband and his family, they'd opt to have my buried, being the traditional Christians that they are. My mom would have my cremated. I don't know what anyone else would choose, but I just.don't.care. As long as my organs are donated, I'm otherwise dead and a useless body. :-)

Because I'm a damn hippie, I hope to be composted, which is essentially the same thing as cremation, I suppose. I want my remains to be allowed to enrich soil, so that I can live through the plants that will grow from the nutrients my body provides.

It's embarrassing even to write. I suppose I'll go take some wheatgrass shots now.

Whenever you burn anything carbon based, a product will be CO2.

PS: Do you grow your own wheat grass, too? :)

I would much rather be cremated. For some reason it seems really creepy and primitive to store your dead flesh in a box. It's like someone keeping a lock of your hair for a long time, but much worse. When we die we are literally just meat and dead flesh so I don't see why you would want people to remember that. Who we are is not our body, it is our consciousness. So after that fades away storing the vessel for your consciousness just seems strange.

There is no reason to burry someone other than religion or tradition.

And not I bad mouth religion, but that's not an environmental choice.

So I will declare envirronmentalism my religion, and tradiional burial against that religion.

Just put me in the ground, no extra fluids, no funeral, no casket.

I hear you PA but I believe that burial must include a casket. You don't have to have the cement vault, however.

I'm only 18 and I rarely think about my own death... I'm only posting on this side because the closest person to me that has ever died, my maternal grandmother, was cremated. So I guess I'd do the same? I dunno...

Yes, Mick, you are way too young to think about this and what it really means. When my niece committed suicide las year they decided to cremate her and too away my one last look mindset. No one knew what her last wishes were. She was 38 and way too oung to think about it too. I just know I was stunned by the choice that was made since cremation is not something the family has ever done, nor was I prepared to see nothing but an urn with 3000 pictures around it. I suppose they wanted us to remember her the way she was but it's taken a long time to come to terms with that particular cremation.
