There's a difference between asking your students to use civil language (the word "retard" is commonly used in a pejorative manner) and demanding the same students don't use specific univocal, descriptive terms. What's more, dismissing this issue with "his class, his rules" is almost childish in its inappropriateness. The fact that this teacher is teaching a class doesn't mean they possess Orwellian control of their students' words. As a public servant, they have no right to act in any interest other than the public's when serving in an official capacity. 1

And whining over the semantics of Illegal immigrants vs. undocumented immigrants isn't childish? He isn't demanding that the students use terms that are derogatory or demeaning those under his charge, he is setting up a set of guidelines that the students need to follow. There are things in life that we have to do that we don't necessarily like, but you have to pull up your britches and deal with it. This nonsense of censoring freedom of speech simply because the teacher wants the term undocumented immigrants used is a gross over-exaggeration, we don't all get to say what we want, when we want it and even if we did it's not always without repercussions. The students 'can' use the term they want but they may be penalized for it. 1

This is pathetic. That professor is an idiot. They are immigrant who came here illegally. If he were telling people not to be disrespectful to them in their essays or not to call them derogatory terms, that would maybe be understandable considering it is his class. But this type of censoring is plain stupid. 1

I'm hoping in the next 4-8 years the PC brigade will be put in the corner where it belongs. Trump, in part, is a backlash against all the liberal looniness that has infected everything from schools, the media and just about every other aspect of everyday life. It's about time! How dare professors tell students what they can not say in their essays on exams. So should students also be allowed to use texting abbreviations in essays as well? It is so arrogant for these Liberals to be censoring speech they deem as not being politically correct. But it's ok for you to censor speech that you disagree with? |
