American accents.

When, how and why do you think Americans, and indeed Canadians, lost their British accents and replaced it with their range of present day more pleasant twangy drawls?
Other colonial countries such as Australia and New Zealand have pretty well  retained their 'chirpy' British accents while the Yanks developed their own, much easier to understand way of speaking.
There is no American accent I cannot easily understand whereas there are a lot of British accents, especially those of northern U.K which I find to be unintelligible.

I would say a big part of this was settlers moving West. They got away from others speaking with a British accent and mixed with slaves and Natives until it was phased out.

I was in NYC for the holidays, and I noticed the natives had accents that possibly vaguely resembles a Scottish accent. It was quite interesting.

Remember that lots of different people came to the US from the Old World and settled, so their accents might be a combination of three or four different ones.

Yeah, I'll go along with that and add that some American accents have a strong resemblance to the Northern Ireland accent.

It is noteworthy however that he great mixture of British and European accents was also present in the settling of Australia and New Zealand.

So, if that's the case, then why did Americans lose their accents?

And in the so called " Deep South", how did they get a drawl?

It could be a mix of African accents, because they had lots of slaves and such.

About the Irish accent there is a simple answer: a large number of Irish and Scottish people went to America during the potato famin between 1840-1860 and settled in New York
