Are Athletes Overpaid
Yes and no.
Look, the top athletes in any given sport are paid exorbitant amounts of money, sure, but you will find the top professionals in almost all professions also receive obscene pay cheques. Athletes are just in your face all the time because sport is popular entertainment. Consider what top stockbrokers, bankers and even salesmen make. It's certainly comparable to what athletes make.
However, I answered yes and no because the top athletes are overpaid in the same sense that the top tier of professionals are overpaid generally.
I believe that, yes, athletes are overpaid. Not only is the sole purpose of their job entertainment, but
they get millions paid to them a year. The athletes are paid over double of what, say, doctors get paid per year. Doctors are needed, or at least highly useful for a healthy (and even happy) life.
Professional athletes are contract laborers who often sacrifice their health in order to play at the level required to stay in the game and deserve whatever the market will bear. They devote their lives to the sport and their careers are often very short. The money is huge and there's plenty for all. I'm all for labor getting it's fair share instead of the old days when the owner of the team got almost all of it.
