Are Olympics a waste of money?
every 4 years countries spend heafty chunks on money on these games. The estimated expenditure of the london olympics 2012 is £24 billion!!!! enough to feed the poor, provide sheltar to the homeless, educate the illetrate andd what not guys. but on the other hand they are a matter of prestige and honour. But is the honour and prestige is worth £24 billion!!!! not likely gain pride and honour by developing the country would be much better, don't u think??? What is your opinion?

What is wrong with you? Talent shows, cartoons and water beds would all be a waste too if Olympics are. People participating in the Olympics aren't just running fast they are showing what they are capable of. and it is not a waste of money, it unites countries and the country which hosts it makes better infrastructure. So, the money is being utilised. Also, people like watching sports it is not a waste of bbc shows. Your message just proves you are an dumb and selfish person, who does not respect people's abilties and cannot see the big picture. Side: NO

Of course. Our ( Britain) Economy is still recovering after the recession, and we're now going to spend billions on some sporting crap? Rubbish! Of course some will argue it is entertainment, and an old tradition that's been around for thousands of years. Well that may be, but the fact remains, lady's and gentleman, this money could be spend saving peoples lives from horrible painful deaths in places like Ethiopia, Kenya, Coté d'evoir e.t.c. Side: YES
Of course government spent a lot of money to organize such a big event, however I think that all of these money were not wasted. After watching opening of the Olympic Games in London, citizens of other countries had seen that the England's economy is not in so bad situation as in Europe countries such as Spain. Also do not forget about thousands or even millions of tourists who have come to London and left there a lot of money for tickets to plane, for souvenirs, presents, for tickets to enjoy seeing competitions and etc. Imagine how much money were earned from the Olympic Games. I think that the Olympic Games were held in high-level! Side: NO

Yes in every sense of the word! 24 billion? From wikipedia i read it was around 14.8 billion USD for London 2012. While hundreds if not millions of people are dying out of hunger on a daily basis, others are busy making profits and promoting the name of their country by squandering 14.8 billion dollars for hosting Olympic Games. This is non-sensical and highly unethical. The Olympic Games could have been made less extravagant and millions could have been saved to help the needy.Indeed, watching this spectacular event unleashing is like living a real boost of emotion. But then, is the feeling of these temporary emotions more prominent than the health of a human being ? We all know it isn't yet we keep on hosting it. It is sad therefore to realise that mankind has adopted an egocentric culture. Side: YES
I believe that the Olympic Games are a waste of money because there are more important things that the money used for these events could be spent on. If we stopped the Olympic Games, a lot of extra money could be donated to child hunger, cancer cures, and child hospitals. Think about the people in third world countries, starving and living without shelter. All charities ask for a small amount of money, yet countries spend millions on a sporting event. The Olympic Games boost economies and also boost pollution at the same time! We are trying our best to stop global warming and this is NOT helping! The native animals of each country loose their habitat to just a stupid car park or an expensive stadium. This can ruin the food chain. The Olympic Games just puts everyone against each other and puts hatred between each country. Side: YES

I believe that Olympic games are a waste of money because the money used on the Olympics should be spent on other things like, helping charities, children in poverty, and to build new schools, universities and hospitals. The cost of the Olympics about $20000000000 and for that money the government can buy about 30000 houses for the homeless and these houses are over $700000 each. Side: YES

If you balance with how much we spend to set it up in relation to how much we make back through tourism etc. It's just a waste of money. But be careful now.. It's a waste of money, but it doesn't mean it doesn't bring far more benefits than just views in the long run. Side: YES

Absolutely they are a waste of money, especially when countries that are already financially crippled & with plenty of impoverished citizens blow billions upon billions of dollars (e.g. Greece & Brazil) & countries like England could have better spent the estimated £24 billion that was spent upon the previous Olympics in London...mind you, it's typical of England/Great Britain to only focus their resources upon London - no wonder so many Scots want out of the United Kingdom!! And while I'm currently flicking from screen to screen (of the 4 available to watch here in Australia), I'm seeing one half-empty stadium after another at these games in Rio, especially at sports that are not even traditional Olympic sports - e.g. Rugby 7's, canoeing, tennis... And ever since I was a kid in the early 80s - when the Olympics were supposedly for amateur athletes - things have changed so much when one considers the 'value' of the athletes in basketball (especially the US team), road cycling (the top pro' cyclists such as Froome, Porte, Nibali, Valverde, etc), tennis (Nadal, Djokovic, Federer, etc) & a number of other 100% professional sports...just like most sports in general, money has ruined things. And finally, I must laugh when people try to justify the cost of holding such an event in order to promote tourism - if they can't fill stadiums while the Olympics are being held, then how in God's name will they flock to the cities afterward, simply because of the Olympics?! Did they honestly not know that such cities as Sydney, London & Rio existed BEFORE they held the Olympics?!! Side: YES
they are a waste of money because the 2008 summer games cost 40 bill on dollars it takes alto of money out of a country like rio had to go 20 percent over budget. One country went 759 percent over budget they had to pay 51 bill on dollars they spent 3 decase paying it off Side: YES

They are more of a waist of money for the country holding them then the world as a whole, and more of a waist for the city it is held in then the country it is held in. Money made in the country and city will be offset by the cost of facilities both before and after the games. The value to the world is arguable because it centers our worth on unproductive games instead intellectually achievements. Side: YES

No I don't think a tinge so . Outweighing its beneficial sides comparison to the other sides , Olympics , really brings a vast array of helpful and good main and side effects to its organising country and folks , of course . Surplus of bulk and chunk of monetary income into country's pocket certainly burst a wide grin for the rest of the countryfolks . The attractions of it , is like suction - irresistable , drawing tourists and backpackers , to flow in to the event-holding cities . Most of the countries in the world is recovering from the economic recession , right ? So , why keep such a good opportunity to cash in at bay ? Saying of pumping money to the poverty , this action should be done from time to time . But , investment in a gigantic , honorable event like Olympic , swearly will have hefty and great returns - few folds . More poor people will be aided , just at the expense of about a month or so . Why not give it a good shot ? Side: NO
Olympics is one of the great events in the world of sports. I take the view that it is not only a waste of money. Olympics brings more money than we spend on it, but I may be mistaken. I believe Olympics brings countries together, and can even form friendships between some countries. And when you think about construction of a stadium in the world, to always hold the Olympics there, it will be a great conflict in the world. Side: NO

These Olympics show that the participants have talent. This shows a goal for these Olympic players that are good at something. If that country wins and the other top 2 win money. They win money for them and that country. So the players help there country. If they're in debt(country) they get money to help them. Another fact is that people look up to those Olympic players. Like me, I look up to Miguel Cabrera. He is an inspiration Side: NO

I think the Olympics are not a waste of money. They show each countries' pride. It brings almost the whole world together. This creates world unity. It also gives people hope and courage to train and become better people. It helps people's dreams come true to be a famous athlete. The Olympics have also helped poor needy people reach their needs and earn their own money. Side: NO
