Are Vaccines Dangerous?

The development of the Anti-vaxx movement has grown in stength recently, but many of their arguments are unfounded.

Taking them can be a little dangerous. Not taking them is likely to be very dangerous.

Yeah, so, here's the deal, Camille.

Your referenced link said nothing about vaccines. So I am assuming it was a joke.

As is the fact that vaccines are harmful. There has been no evidence of such. Ever.

What is happening here, when people report they encountered some sort of health problem after being vaccinated, is that they are falling victim to the age-old mistake in reasoning that us in science refer to as "propter hoc, ergo hoc" which basically means, "If it is followed by, it is caused by."

For instance, a guy gets a vaccine and then a week later gets sick with the flu, or some other viral infection. Or food poisoning, or his ulcer becomes inflamed. Or a pregnant woman who was going to have a baby with a birth defect due to a genetic mutation anyway, gets a harmless flu vaccine a few weeks before delivery. So all these folks erroneously blame the vaccine on their problem.

Vaccines are composed of an inert virus. Dead. Harmless. All it does is act as a sort of "impostor" to your immune system. Your anti-bodies see it (often flu vaccines are inert viruses of whatever particular virus that the CDC is Atlanta feels will be prevalent in your geographical region that season).

So you immune system "sees" this virus and then kicks into action, creating anti-bodies that are geared-up and ready to strike down and kill that REAL virus, should it ever invade your system. Think of the vaccine as a drill sergeant organizing troops for a practice Op to combat a potential enemy.

That's all it does.

Fact is, vaccines save millions of lives every year. Read-up on some of the terribly deadly flu viruses thru history. (Do you know more people have died from flu than ALL the wars?)

Consider yourself lucky to have vaccines. As well as the tremendously gifted men of science and medicine who create them.
