Honestly feminism is SUPPOSED to be simply gender/sex equality, and that definition of feminism I would agree with. However often times it seems to me that a lot of feminists representing equal rights for women in particular go to far, setting standards on what a women should be like, and sometimes whether or not consciously realized some feminists wind up putting women on a pedestal above man, and taking it to the extent where it starts to not seem like gender/sex equality but "reversed mysogynistc". I understand why, women have had (and in some cases still do) struggled with being treated equally within society, some feminists are to uptight, and some aren't. I believe in gender/sex equality which I guess would technically make me a feminist, though I'm not big on the term feminism for it's baggage, plus I'd rather call myself a "gender equalist" or something like that, calling yourself a feminist seems awfully much like calling yourself a "masculinist" to me.

One of the qualities of being a man is not caring about fashion. When you think about a man who cares about fashion, what comes to mind? ;)

I don't need a group of men to tell me that I should strive to look like He-Man. I don't need a group of men to fight the media for their depiction of men. I'm either secure in my soft, round, shape or I'm too apathetic and lazy to work towards that look ;)

Well actually, He-man has it's baggage to, to be completely honest, he-man has been perceived as homerotic by quite a handful of people... http://www.cartoonbrew.com/tv/he-mans-five-gayest-adventures-80303.html

It's a good thing then that I didn't use him as a role model ;)

In the context of the argument provided above, no. While both images support a ridiculous standard how men and women generally react to these images is very different.

The average male upon seeing another strong male figure actually feel better about themselves, images like these reinforce the masculinity men see in themselves. Upon viewing unrealistic images of other women, or those with extremely high standards, most women feel inadequate. It is not news men and women see things differently.

Men on average also view representations of women's bodies differently than their own (Well duh right?). Men are more likely to see women's bodies as parts and not whole, and women's bodies who are over sexualized are viewed in parts of the brain where objects are and not people.

The difference between how men and women view these representations of their own sexuality and each others has been discussed extensively in psychology, anthropology and a slew of other social sciences. Any internet search will likely lead to a plethora of studies or news stories outlining these findings.

Really it just comes down to whether someone really cares enough about this subject to give it a more objective look.

Definitely depends on the feminist. I've read/heard of a few who are way over the top. But most of the ones I know are pretty easy going and rational.

Being a feminist and being uptight has nothing to do with each other. Anytime someone is passionate about an issue or belief, people consider them uptight. For example, saying "vegetarians are uptight" is a completely ridiculous stereotype. Just because you don't eat meat doesn't mean you're snobby, think you're better than everyone else and are completely estranged from everyone else. Some feminists, I admit, do go a bit out of control with their anger. However, many people nowadays blow off issues that are important. The people who recognize these issues and try to voice their opinions are often laughed off. People in this age try to pretend everything's alright. If you have a slight heart problem, everything's going to be alright. However, this could develop into a much bigger problem if not treated. The same goes for women's rights. If people keep pretending that everything that's wrong is alright, more of these bad behaviors will occur. People who seem "uptight" are actually strong-willed free thinkers. They're not afraid to voice their opinions no matter how ridiculed they are. People like these helped African Americans gain their freedom. They were laughed at, ridiculed and estranged from society. Without free thinkers like these, issues will never be solved. So not all feminists are uptight. Stereotypes inflate small attributes of a small group of people to cover the whole group of people. Some people take it to extremes, but it is definitely not a bad thing to be a feminist. If you think you're uptight just because you're a feminist, know that all of those stereotypes are crap.

Side: HEY!!! I'm a feminist.

Any organization is suceptible to being taken over by radicals. In other words, saying that feminist are the opposite of "uptight" (wharever that is) is just doing the same thing as the people who call feini "uptight" but in the opposite direction. Feminist should just be feminist. They should not be labeled as uptight nor should they be labeled as the opposite of uptight.
