While I do believe that many homophobes are the average Conservative, I don't think most of them are.

I would say most people who actually hate gays would be Neo-Nazis and Klans men, who are not very Conservative. We can categorize them as Right Wing, but they do not think in a Conservative manner (actually, klans men possibly, but Neo-Nazism seems to be much more popular than KKK).

The Neo-Nazis are a National Socialist Worker's Party of America and they hate cops and the military (which is why American History X is total bullshit... still like the movie though).

Conservatives are the highest supporters of the police and military and it is part of their belief system to defend these people the most.

Neo-Nazis are an extremely Right Wing party, but they are definitely not Conservative in the sense that we use it today (to describe traditional Americans).

Also, being against Gay Marriage is not homophobic. Since 99% of Conservatives are religious, it really has much more to do with religion. Not saying it's right (don't down vote me for stupid shit like that) but I am saying that it's not for the purpose of hating gays.

Most conservatives are Christian. As a Christian I don't "hate" people for being gay, or for being anything. Hate goes against Christianity. Now I'm sure a lot of people call themselves Christian but lack these qualities. People like me are commonly seen as haters because we have morals and are not afraid to speak our opinion.

And I hate the word "homophobe". It's misleading. It sounds like some kind of disorder. I can't have morals without a negative label!?

I think I can speak for most conservatives and say that we are mostly not "homophobes" because we do not fear or hate gays.
