Are our beliefs our identity?

i think certain identities will have tendencies to certain beliefs, but people can exist with similar beliefs and different identities. in this way, a belief can be an indicator of a personality, but it is neither absolute nor causal. the only other way i can argue it would be with the current way people are defined, with the whole nature vs nurture thing. but that wouldn't mean much if that's what you're refuting Our identity is the summation of our immediate and recalled experiences in relation to our genetics dispositions. Our beliefs derive from our experiences as well and may influence our identity if we attach to them, but do not necessarily determine identity (and certainly not exclusively as is implied). |
