Are you excited about the reestablishment of diplomatic ties to Cuba?
Washington (CNN) -- The end of the 50-year freeze in diplomatic relations with Cuba will mean many more U.S. travelers could be on their way to the neighbor island, only 90 miles from Key West, Florida.
A much welcome change, the people of Cuba should not have to suffer over two dictatorships having a hissy fit, I am wondering what JoeCavalry thinks of all this lol.
A typical response from a liberal. Its the USA fault that the Cuban people are suffering. No its not. It is the Castro boys fault, and theirs alone. Quit trying to blame the US for all the worlds problems. I bet I could list a 1000 things around the world that you believe is the US fault. Let me guess. The typhoon that hit Japan a couple years back is the US fault since we contribute to much to global warming.
This is the major difference between liberals and conservatives. Liberals blame the US for everything and conservatives believe the US helps other societies to try to achieve prosperity.
What makes you think im a liberal? Im progressive so what ever that label implies i guess thats what i am, that being said i agree its the castro families fault but not the majority of the Cuban people, because of this i pain to see the country and its people suffer.
As for America being at fault yes they are, the only reason the embargo took hold is because America couldnt control that country so America did act like a hissy bitch and the only reason they didnt overthrow castro was because at that time Russia would of jumped in and would of started wwlll.
America helps only there economic interest aka corporate lobbyist so if a country can feed America's blood thrist for greed and power then America helps if not destroys like Cuba, whys is communist China so different ill tell you, the difference is China isnt a push over and China creates and makes a profit so righteous American turns a blind eye on there inhumanity.
The problem with American conservatives is that they are in most cases to narrow minded to see the big picture and are to caught up on American exceptionalism and entitlement holding an ideology of affluenza and cognitive dissonance.
it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out that the majority of the world's problems can all be traced back to American greed and thirst for power to create a world empire controlled by 1 percent of the population the rich of the rich.
The Cuban people are suffering because the Castro boys control everything. Cubans have such little basic rights and nothing will change until communism is replaced by a capitalistic society and free elections.
JFK blew it. The Soviets would have backed down had we invaded Cuba. You can't defend another nation that far away from home. We would have wiped the Soviets out in a naval and air battle over them defending Cuba.
Don't kid yourself about China. The Chinese people are extremely poor compared to us. They also lack numerous basic rights that we enjoy here in the USA. China isn't as strict as Cuba as far as the economy goes either.
So how is it Americas fault over the disaster that took place in Zimbabwe years ago? President Mugabe steals the white mans land and tourism goes to hell and their inflation rate was over 11 million percent. The government was printing 100 billion dollar notes where a loaf of bread cost millions. Yea, I know, it is the USAs fault, particularly the white man here, isn't that right.
Lifting the embargo will do absolutely nothing. All the money will go right into the Castro boys bank accounts while the Cuban people get nothing.
And BTW, the Castro boys owe US businesses and families 100s of millions of dollars from their illegal seizure of land and property from the revolution. If Obama had any balls he will tell the Castro boys to pay up or here come the marines to send you two bastards to hell. Which is right where they belong.
I don't know how to get through to all you bleeding hearts but the Cuban people will always suffer as long as the Castro boys and their cronies rule with an iron fist. If you truly want the Cuban people to enjoy a better lifestyle, you would advocate for the overthrow of these two brutal, evil men and their cohorts.
the only reason the embargo took hold is because America couldn't control that country so America did act like a hissy bitch and the only reason they didnt overthrow Castro was because at that time Russia would of jumped in and would of started wwlll.
Purely progressive opinion ---- We caused Cuba to fall into Communism? We caused Castro and the USSR to join in a trade agreement? We caused the Cubans to leave their homes, their families, their country? We caused the Mariel boatlift, where thousands who had lived under Castro for three decades, risk everything to escape and come here? We caused Castro to sponsor terrorism, even until today?
America helps only their own economic interest And you think that the most successful economy in the world was built by a lack of interest? You think we are not the most generous nation on earth when other nations need help?
The problem with American conservatives is that they are in most cases to narrow minded to see the big picture and are to caught up on American exceptionalism and entitlement holding an ideology of affluenza and cognitive dissonance.
Our founders were exceptional men, who set in motion an exceptional form of self government. The world was forever changed by their success. Their example has been envied and copied for over two hundred years,in every part of the globe. Affluenza is a term that progressives have applied to present a distorted view of free trade.
Your Kool-Aid is as bitter is your hatred for the US.
Well... I wouldn't exactly say I'm excited, but this was a Mexican Standoff if there ever was one. So, meh? Let it play itself out. I doubt it could make things worse for the Cuban people, unless Barry makes this his new island vacation hangout?
Yes. Cuba is the most underdeveloped nation in the Americas and it is devastating to the see the level of poverty and the level of isolation which this nation has experienced in the last 5 decades. Now that diplomatic ties are finally open again, tourism will increase in Cuba which will not only result in an increase in revenue for Cuba with which the country and its meager and petty infrastructure can be repaired but will also result in a large influx of Cuban culture to the Americas and to the world.
Just like to add that the day before Obama made his announcement the Cuban Coast Guard rammed and sunk a boat headed to the USA carrying 32 people. A passenger said the coast guard was aware that there were kids on board but decided to sink it anyway. Everyone was arrested. The women were released but all the men are still in jail.
Get arrested for trying to flee a brutal dictator and get sent to jail. Sure, these are the people we want to have normal relations with. I can't believe there are actually people who support this regime. Whoever has sympathy for the Cuban people will advocate for the overthrow of the Castro boys and set the people free. We don't need to financially support the Castro boys, which is what will now happen.
A terrible decision once again by Obama. Let us not forget in the early 1980s the Castro boys asked the Soviet Union to launch a nuclear strike against the USA. The Soviets refused. In the 30 years since the Castro boys have not once denounced their intention to cause us harm. Those two are just one rung underneath on the ladder from Stalin and Lenin.
By trying to normalize relations only reaffirms the Castro boys position to keep the Cuban people without basic rights that are enjoyed by so many others in that part of the world. When a star athlete is not allowed to leave his/her country we should be doing everything in our power to bring about change.
The US uses drone strikes to take out terrorists. I consider the Castro boys just as evil. We should use whatever tools necessary, including a covert attack and kill these two brutal dictators and bring democracy and prosperity to Cuba. Until the Castro boys are gone and free elections are installed, the Cuban people will continue to suffer even if we lift the embargo. Nothing will change 50 years from now if the communists are still running the country.
The embargo failed in that it did not lead to a regime change, yes that is true. However, it has been successful in that it stopped billions of dollars from being funneled into the Castro boys personal bank accounts which then could be used to prop up other governments who are hostile towards us. Look no further than the piece of shit Hugo Chavez, a close ally of the Castro boys, who used the oil revenue of Venezuela to launch a crusade against the USA. I am sure he is rotting in hell right now, which is where he belongs. Can't wait for the Castro boys to join him there.
Your original statements pertained to ongoing rights abuses, and my refutation was made in that context. Per your own statements, the embargo clearly has not improved rights conditions in the country.
Regarding your new argument, the Cuban economy suffered more from the collapse of the Soviet regime than it has from the U.S. embargo. As of the 2000s the economy has strengthened despite our embargo, and Cuba has actually outpaced other Latin American counterparts with which the U.S. has relations upon a range of economic related variables (source). A nation facing a 50 year embargo either collapses or learns to adapt, and in the case of Cuba it has been the latter... rendering the embargo relatively ineffective. If anything, the longevity of the embargo has given Cuba greater economic independence from the U.S. than most countries in Latin America and the world in general.
Jace, kudos to you for an intelligent, well thought out rebuttal. I will give you an up vote for your post. Now, embargoes can only work if the entire international community gets behind it. Clearly this won't happen in regards to Cuba. As for some who believe the USA will greatly benefit from lifting the embargo, they are delusional. The impact to the US economy will be extremely minimal. It will not boost our GDP in the slightest. Cuba is just to small of a country.
Cuba, on the other hand, will see an uplift in their economy. The problem is the Castro boys will be the main beneficiaries of it. Exactly what did Obama get for the Cuban people with his decision. No free elections, Cubans can't leave their country, dissidents still get jailed, religious freedom is still minimal. Freedom of the press, freedom of speech, etc, will still be rights the Cubans will be denied. Obama didn't demand anything from the Castro boys. Rauls daughter came out and said Obama must be dreaming if he thinks Cuba will return to capitalism. This deal benefits the Castro boys greatly and does little for the US and the Cuban people.
Cuba (or "the Castro boys", if you prefer) will receive more economic benefits than the U.S., but at considerable cost to its economic and political autonomy from the U.S. The restoration of economic and political relationships effectively reintegrates the financial and governmental sectors of the two countries, and of the two the U.S. has a considerably greater economy and more political power which it will now be able to leverage within that relationship. The embargo has become ineffective both because it lacks international support and because over 50 years it rendered the Cuban government relatively immune to U.S. sanctions.
The USA negotiates with many many countries who have threatened it. The USA is currently in a coalition with many countries in the Middle East whom in years prior have declared religious war on the USA. This is not a first and it will most likely not be the last. The US needs to be the "bigger man" and repair relationships it has with countries across the world.
The Only reason why this diplomat SHIT is happening in Cuba is because Fidel is too old to do anything about. If Fidel was healthy, he would tell the Us Go Fuck yourselves. Fidel can't trust The USA, and i don't blame him. We did try to kill him at the failed Bay Of Pigs Invasion.
It's still a cold war,Raul is no fool and the media finds appreciation and popularity by writing articles showing positive effects of the compromise between the two states-it won't meet any end,it would remain a severe diplomatic tie.
