It is reasonable to believe that he does not believe you have to have a clinical condition to be human. He was expressing supposed sadness.

Those people have a predisposition toward clinical depression. That doesn’t make them virtuous, that just makes them unwell.

Depression is frequently triggered by external events. That's how depression works for the vast majority of sufferers. One of those triggers is a shitty world.

Depressed people see only the shittiness, regardless of how great things are. Depression is on the rise in the most advanced and wealthy society in the history of the world. They aren’t better people for this.
