If this is your first time checking out a debate, here are some quick tips to help get you started:
Arguments with the highest score are displayed first.
Argument replies (both in favor and in opposition) are displayed below the original argument.
To follow along, you may find it helpful to show and hide the replies displayed below each argument.
To vote for an argument, use these icons:
You have the power to cast exactly one vote (either up or down) for each argument.
Once you vote, the icon will become grayed out and the argument's score will change.

OK, we can all play the big, funny tough guy over the internet. But let's be honest here. You're stood in front of the all powerful overlord of reality, who you have been actively defying for your entire life... there's only one thing to say.
I'M SORRY, I'M SORRY, I'M SORRY, PLEASE DON'T CAST ME INTO HELL, I WANNA GO TO HEAVEN!
Have you read the divine comedy? There ain't nothing funny about it...
I used to be like that. All nonchalant and headstrong. But there comes a point after fighting against religion for so long when one realises something.
You're in a lose-lose situation.
If you're right, then you wasted your life. All that fighting against mere superstition, all the rebelling and fuss over something as primitive as religion. Even if you managed to "achieve" something, you won't be around to see it.
If you're wrong, then oh man, you're in trouble. An eternity of torture and suffering awaits you. Your spur of the moment defiance against God would be quickly forgotten, as you're cast into the innermost bowels of hell. You cannot complain, you cannot change anything.
Is that a reason to believe? No. But it is a reason to to stop caring about such trivial matters. And hey, if you're wrong about the whole God thing, maybe he'll be a little more merciful when you come to meet him.
If you think it is a lose-lose situation then you have simply grown weary and tired, then you need to retire and let the new and young meat take over.
You would rather not fight against something so detrimental to humanity? Simply let it be and spread and destroy? As long as it threatens humanity with its crap, any opposition to it is good. It's not a loss at all, it's pretty much a necessity.
It's not only about achieving something, presently it is about showing enough resistance so they couldn't "take over". If they did another dark age would come. But yeah... never gonna happen. Religion is already on the way out.
If I were wrong I would start searching for ways to kill that prick.
That god could perhaps be merciful toward me but I wouldn't show same regard for him.
If he were real and I met him I think I would somehow trick him into "can you create a stone so heavy you cannot lift it?" After all, he wasn't smart enough to create everything perfect even with his supposed endless powers. Might just be stupid enough.

I'm fully willing to admit my flaws. I am not brave enough, nor courageous enough, nor willing enough to dedicate my life to opposing religion. The only thing I should be worrying about is myself. When I die, that's it. I don't get an extra life. I'm not wasting this one fighting something that is slowly dying in Western civilization anyway, something so below me it would be akin to dedicating a chunk of my life to disprove Santa to kids.
You may think it is selfish. It probably is. But it would take someone far less selfish than I to speed up the death of religion.

Again, internet tough man talk aside, this is not some cretinous urchin on a street corner we're discussing. It's an omnipotent being. Everyone has fights that they cannot win, a fight against God being one of them. If by some miracle, religion is true, I will be the first to admit how wrong I was. I will not worship God through choice, but if he coerces me, I will. I am a fallible human, just like everyone else. When faced with infinite punishment or worshiping a God I dislike, I will choose the latter, through natural fear of pain and suffering.
Perhaps you are one of the very rare few who has the balls to challenge authority. The authority, in this case. If so, then when we come to the afterlife, and God is somehow real, I will enjoy watching you spit in the eye of God. It will amuse me, and inside I will be supporting your decision. However, my support will stop when you're thrown into an eternal furnace.
I agree, but Yahweh is different than a deist god, or Odin or Ra or another god.
Yahweh is directly opposed to science, having made the Earth look far older than 6000 years, and is generally deceitful and violent.
I would happily drink with Thor or have my heart weighed by Anubis or cross the river Styx with Charon.
I do not mind those gods, for Ma'at honors truth and order, Thor values courage and many other gods are actually just and kind.
But Yahweh is not the same. This is a brutal god who lies and calls himself merciful. He is a deceitful god who calls himself The Truth. He calls humanity evil, and then says "I am the way", forcing these poor mortals to worship him or suffer forever in the hell he has made.
It is very different than dying and appearing before a kind and actually loving god, but Yahweh, the god of the Bible is not someone I would wish to be friends with.
If it was Yahweh, from the Old and New Testament, and the flood, babel, creationism and all that was real, then I would probably prefer hell to whatever the god thought of as heaven.
I'm a Buddhist. And I believe all religion and deity has served societies well in any given country and given time. China has prospered under the belief of Taosim, Confucianism, I- Ching and Buddhism. They have prospered without Yahweh. A jealous God that lays not even A finger on Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva, Osiris, Kali, Zeus, Quetzalcoatl... The existence of multiple deities in every society on earth is to cater for different culture and ideology in every parts of the world. Odd coincidence, no? Yahweh the odd one out. I would face Yahweh but I wont do it alone. You mess with an innocent child from Egypt, India, China, Europe, America you mess with all the deities. and Buddha is fine with atheist too.. you both have more in common than you think.
I doubt very much that non believers will be standing before Yahweh , Emmanuel , since they will be dead, no more , ceased to be , ex Humans , pushing up the daisys bereft of life.
I'd say, " Well, i guess i wrong about the "you don't exist" bit, Still right about the " you're responsible for the deaths and misery of billions" bit..!
You mean there's an afterlife, and my consciousness is not eternally disembodied? I can continue to be an entity despite your best efforts of making this afterlife "hell" for me? I think I won.
Some of you are either showing your age or your IQ level but since your IQ is lower than your age when is your 21st Birthday exactly - I had hoped for some sensible intelligent debate in here but alas the education system in the last 30 years seems to have let us down somewhat. How can you debate something you have never even studied I see people dont know what Yahweh is or the difference between fact and theory
Maybe its a youth thing Cool to be a non believer rebels without a brain. Now listen up I wanna tell you a story
And it came to pass, as he sowed, some fell by the way side, and the fowls of the air came and devoured it up.
And some fell on stony ground, where it had not much earth; and immediately it sprang up, because it had no depth of earth:
But when the sun was up, it was scorched; and because it had no root, it withered away.
And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up, and choked it, and it yielded no fruit.
And other fell on good ground, and did yield fruit that sprang up and increased; and brought forth, some thirty, some sixty, and some an hundred.
And he said unto them, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear.
And the moral of the story is that you have the opportunity to hear the word you have ears, now all you have to do is sit quietly and read, reflect, study and think it all through then come back and discuss it properly
You are massively presupposing as one's age increases, their intelligence increases. However, if you'd bother to look around the site, you'd notice this isn't the case. There are a couple of highly people who aren't even over twenty. Chuckhades and Apollo go into that group...as do I.
And don't get me started with at I.Q. bullshit. That test is SO massively flawed.
You think I haven't studied other religion. Another presumption. No, I WAS raised (indoctrinated) as a Christan. Although, I eventually deserted that belief due to lack of evidence. And yes, I'm quite young (15). However, my atheism isn't "to be/look cool." It is simply a matter of truth. If I EVER see evidence for the existence of god/s, I will change my position.
"Hear the word in your ears?" What in the hell is that supposted to mean. I reckon its something along the lines of 'belief in the one almighty god, even though that particular belief has NO evidence to support it. Nah, I'll pass...
Hm... I would be mad. After a long session of being angry and screaming at him for everything he has done wrong, I accept the fact that I'm going to hell. Either way you are going to hell, might aswell express why you have been an Atheist.
"PLEASE do not tell me you are anything like they've described on Earth. I want to like you, I want to be on your good side. But not if you are the jackass many of them have detailed."
