Autonomous vehicles

What do you think about self driving vehicles? How will it affect the future of road travel, it seems to be a very real thing in our future!

I believe it is inevitable, as technology grows, the opportunities to use it in practical ways increase. Slowly these changes evolve, and as we slowly accept these changes, before you know it, we are sitting in our vehicles being driven to work, not exceeding the speed limit, not zig zagging, not tail gating, etc. etc. etc. So what about traffic tickets... No more violations? Seems crazy.... Just might be the future..... Who knows.....

I believe it is a great thing because I should be able to drive 100 miles per hour to work and all the autonomous vehicles will get out of my way!

I think there is a certain appeal to it when you go on long trips. The idea of being able to just sit and read or watch a show while your car takes you to where you need to be is very appealing. It would reduce accidents a great deal. On the flip side, there are still some kinks that need to be worked out. I remember hearing about a fellow that was killed while he was reading in his car (it was a self driving car) because the sun glare off the truck in front of him screwed with the sensors and it crashed. It we all go full autonomous it may be good but I think we would all need to.

If the only operators on the road were autonomous vehicles I'd have less problem with it. But keep in mind all the mix of mankind is going to be out there with them, too, side by side. So that means there's going to be accidents (caused by both), and road rage (by people of course), and congestion, and even more parking shortages, and on and on. The first time you get in an accident with a robot how are you going to feel about it? Will it stop and exchange insurance? If it didn't physically hit your car but caused you to wreck would it know to stop at the scene? What about the first time you're late to work because a line of 7 robots had to get through a light before you could(?) The first time your most used parking lots are already full because some spots went to driverless vehicles for some reason(?) There's a lot of potential wrinkles to this.

It's different when the transportation mode isn't really traveled by both civilians and others (such as freight railines). Can you imagine if common people and freight trains were sharing train tracks?

I know nothing is going to stop this, and I'm not trying to stop it either. But it's not the glory it keeps being promoted to be. Any time a transit system has more volume added to it, for any reason, there are challenges and headaches and new expenses. Most of our roads and highways are already a nightmare at peak commuting times. Now you add a whole new class of vehicles out there taking care of business and it's bound to stress the system more, even if some of those vehicles are replacing the need for human drivers.
