Google have the history whereas Yahoo is just there. I've never used yahoo before and the only thing they are associated with me by is that I talk to people who use the yahoo.com email addresses. Google has the applications to go further than a search engine, for example, Google Earth, Google Sketch-up, Google Analytics, just to name a few. Can't say you aren't impressed by their massive line-up.

While Yahoo has a lot of bells and whistles, Google has more stable apps and great API's for programmers.

Google is on the right track. Yahoo is just a hack.

Google is more effective, if only for ease of use. It's a simple efficient website that takes far less time to actually make a search that Yahoo does. Even though the layout is simple enough, it also contains many of the features that Yahoo has, only in a more simple, user friendly design.
