I cannot think of a book by Rand I wasn't inspired by. Add to that another favorite of mine, "The Virtue of Selfishness." You'll never think of that word as you have, ever again.

I know it came in for a lot of criticism in the States but I would highly recommend James Frey's A Million Little Pieces. Other personal favourites include:

1984 by George Orwell

Choke by Chuck Palahniuk

Redemption by Stanley 'Tookie' Wiliams

The Art of War by Sun-Tzu

They're all quite dark in their subject matter: Drug addiction, totalitarianism, sexual addiction, gang culture, war etc. But if you're looking to challenge, yourself and your intellect, pick them up!

"A Million Little Pieces" by James Frey is one of the most amazing books I've ever read, no matter the fact-fiction hoopla that surrounded it. His follow up, "My Friend Leonard" was also an unforgettable writing of friendship, personal growth and love. "1984" by George Orwell, has and will always stand the test of time as we no longer see this as a fictional and completely futuristic impossibility. Another book I love is the autobiography "Benazir Bhutto, Daughter of Destiny" which I received just a week after her death. A fascinating and brilliantly told story of a life cut too short by political intrigue. Another autobiography, "From Emperor to Citizen" is also a book and film I love to read and see from time to time. The film, "The Last Emperor" by Bernardo Bertolucci makes the original book come alive. Aisin-Gioro Pu Yi became the last Emperor of China at the age of 3 and was forced to abdicate at age 19. A compelling story of a child whose life was chosen for him as he lived in the Forbidden City untouched by the reality of life surrounding the palace walls. The story that unfolds is one of greed, court intrigue and the "Puppet Court" that was Pu Yi's world until he was betrayed by his own court,ousted, jailed and slowly came to grips with his life as a Republic gardener in the Botanical Gardens of Peking until his death. The last I will list is "Lethal Intent" written by Sue Russell. It is the true story of America's first female serial killer, Aileen Carol Wuornos whose killing spree garnered her 6 separate death sentences and who confounded the profiling experts. In the media frenzy that ensued Wuornos' arrest, the world watched in horror as her trials forever changed the concepts of the crimes a woman is capable of. A riveting story that will keep you glued to each page until it's over.

The historically reversed novels of Harry Turtledove are those that one should read at least one adventure of sometime in his/her lifetime. With stories revolving around several reversed theories such as "What if the South had won the Civil War?" (Guns of the South) and some over "What if the Nazis had succeeded in taking over Europe?" (I don't know the title of that book off the top of my head) (;

It is really an ingenious variety of books for all adventurous history lovers.

Although some of his longer stories, such as the Call of Cthulu, are pretty good too, however my favorite of his stories is a short story called...Damn, I forgot its name. But it is about this old man, who should have died years ago but is still alive and very sick. And like something in his apartment breaks and some young dude has to come to fix it, and his apartment is freezing. But like towards the end of the story the old man dies because the air conditioner breaks and the only thing keeping him alive was the cold temperature of the room and when it heated up he died. It is very interesting. I believe it is the first or second story in HP Lovecraft's book Waking Up Screaming. Check it out if you like horror with a science-y feel to it. (:
