In fact, it is very likely that every species, including our own, will die.

Individualism is to the species what Total Quality Management is to a product. That is to say, individualism has produced significant improvements in the quality of life in general to our species. Furthermore, individualism is a product, in part, of the recognition of the reality that humans are in fact individuals and so should be treated accordingly. It is utterly irrational to judge an individual by some proported group identity. Humans are more complex then that.

Though this irrationality served as a valuable survival mechanism in primitive times, our lingering predisposition toward collectivist thinking remains just as primitive.

There are those who claim that their brand of collectivism is not for this group over that group, but rather for the species as a whole. Though this appears on the surface to be somewhat better than racism, it is perhaps worse, certainly in its outcomes. The Nazi end goal was supposedly for the good of the species. The communist rejected Nazistic racism in favor of classism, and they managed even greater human destruction than Hitler, though supposedly for the same noble goal of the good of the species.

The less rabid types of collectivists who promote the good of the whole would be no less destructive if left unchecked by individualists. These are the sorts that cried out in the 70’s for global cooling and the population boom that would lead to mass starvation. They cry out now for the devastating outcomes of global warming that they can never predict. They constantly call for the destruction of the quality of life of today’s people for the sake of the whole in some never-proven theoretical future. This type of person is only distinguishable by their language from the Bible fundamentalist doomsdayer.

No human has ever had a collective thought, and no thought was ever had by a group. The greatest improvement to the whole of humanity was only acquired through sufficient numbers of individuals seeking to improve themselves. They cannot improve anyone else.

Individualists tend to stay out of each other’s way. In light of the facts of the matter, even a collectivist should stay out of the individualists way...for the good of the whole.
