California Proposition 8

the banning of gay marriage

Proposition 8, also known as the Eliminates Right of Same-Sex Couples to Marry Act, will appear on the November 2008 ballot in California. It was previously titled the Protect Marriage Act. It has also been known as the Same-Sex Marriage Ban or the Limit on Marriage Amendment. If it passes, it will add a new constitutional amendment to the California Constitution that will have the following text: "Only marriage between a man and a woman is valid or recognized in California." The ballot title for the measure says that Prop. 8 "eliminates the right of same-sex couples to marry".

People who support Proposition 8 say that it solidifies the historic concept of marriage as being one man and one woman. If not passed, then they warn gay marriage will be taught in schools as acceptable lifestyle. Parents should be able to decide what religious beliefs their children have, not the state. This proposition lets the people decide whether gay marriage is acceptable, instead of leaving the decision to the judges.

I'm for it. And I don't give a rat's ass if anyone bitches at me about bringing religion into this thing, but according to the bible, marriage is a special and spiritual bond between a MAN and a WOMAN. i believe that about marriage and that's that.

Now don't think I'm anti-gay either. I have a few of my best friends are gay, and they know how i feel about this proposition and they respect my views just as much as I respect theirs.

I'm voting for it in the name of the things I believe in.

Okay, maybe you need to re read the first amendment:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion

Your beliefs should not affect the lives of others. If I believed Catholics shouldn't get to vote would this mean I could try to pass a law? NO! By basing a law on religious beliefs you are violating the first amendment.

I feel that people should uphold our constitution as proud Americans.I feel that if you are an American, then you are deliberately going against everything that our ancestors have worked so hard for. I feel that if you are no on 8, then the constitution and your own COUNTRY mean ABSOLUTELY nothing to you!! I believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman. I believe that God created a traditional marriage for a reason, there is a purpose for everything. I believe that same-sex marriage decreases the value of getting married. People try to argue that everyone should have equal rights about marriage, but equal rights are not the problem. There are great health risks and dangers that can occur in same sex marriage practices, compared to very little risks in Traditional marriage practices.

Bottom line is we were made to be with a man or a woman. NOT two men or two women. It DOESN'T work that way!

You can sit and argue that we believe this because of our Christian beliefs, but the fact is there are more reasons why we believe what we believe.

YOU should open your eyes and see why this is CLEARLY wrong!

Gay mirage is morally wrong. Homosexuality is a choice, its not something that people are born into.

Oh okay Mr. Scientist. I'll take your word for it.

You see what I did there? I pointed out that you weren't a scientist in a sarcastic way to prove the point that you have no idea what your talking about. How about you watch this movie for an actual opinion before you spew your hate and stupidity.

Also, "morally wrong?" Under whose definition? Is it hurting anyone? NO! Then how is it morally wrong? The government is not supposed to be the moral judge of society it is there to protect the citizens of a nation and no one is hurt by gay marriage.

Against it. As long as the government controls marriage, they shouldn't be withholding benefits from same-sex couples.

but, it would be a lot better if they didn't give benefits to married couples. receiving domestic rights should be a civil union only process. leave marriage to the religious people if they care so much about who gets it.

Of course I'm against this Proposition since I am gay, BUT, I'd be against it even if I were not. I've seen too much pain, too much devastation, too much sorrow in the gay world because they are not recognized as being anything but GAY. And GAY is the outcast of life, I don't care how politically correct you seem! Words are cheap, back-stabbing even cheaper and being or seeming to be politically correct is to be less than nothing if you don't believe in what you're saying.

I've thought much on this subject and I don't mind if people cannot be married so much as I mind the legal aspects of people who love and live together being left with nothing in the end. Gay people need protections...badly. If you need to be reminded of how critical this is watch the first installment of "If These Walls Could Talk" which was an HBO special several years back with a fine cast including Ellen DeGeneris. The first vignette speaks to what I'm saying to you. Allow it to speak to you...simply as a human being!

Yes on Love, No on 8. I'm straight, married, and a mother of two. I believe everyone should have the opportunity to raise a family like I have been blessed to raise. God is Love. Love in every single one of its beautiful incarnations. Marry On California! Marry on!

"Love in every single one of its beautiful incarnations."

Oh? What if someone loves to his or her genitals to crowds? Is that beautiful? Is that god?

Well of course not! I'm talking about marriage which has nothing to do with showing genitals to a crowd. Which is tacky and lame whether it be a gay guy or Britney Spears showing the genitals... Loving your genitals in front of a crowd has nothing to with sexual orientation and everything to do with being a little trashy. And ladies and gentlemen, trash comes in ALL races, classes, creeds, social status, and yes sexual orientation.

Prop 8 is about marriage and family, nothing more, nothing less.

this is wrong.

Proposition 8 would eliminate fundamental rights for a group of Californians. It’s unfair and it’s wrong.

Fiction: Prop 8 doesn’t discriminate against gay people.

Fact: Prop 8 is simple: it eliminates the rights for same-sex couples to marry. Prop 8 would deny equal protections and write discrimination against one group of people—lesbian and gay people—into our state constitution.

Fiction: Teaching children about same-sex marriage will happen here unless we pass Prop 8.

Fact: Not one word in Prop 8 mentions education. And no child can be forced, against the will of their parents, to be taught anything about health and family issues at school. California law prohibits it.

California’s top educators including Superintendent of Schools Jack O’Connell and California Teachers all agree: Prop 8 has nothing to do with education.

Fiction: Churches could lose their tax-exemption status.

Fact: The court decision regarding marriage specifically says “no religion will be required to change its religious policies or practices with regard to same-sex couples, and no religious officiant will be required to solemnize a marriage in contravention of his or her religious beliefs.

Fiction: A Massachusetts case about a parent’s objection to the school curriculum will happen here.

Fact: California gives parents an absolute right to remove their kids and opt-out of teaching on health and family instruction they don’t agree with. The opponents know that California law already covers this and Prop 8 won’t affect it, so they bring up an irrelevant case in Massachusetts.

Fiction: Four Activist Judges in San Francisco…

Fact: Prop 8 is about eliminating a fundamental right. Judges didn’t grant the right, the constitution guarantees the right. Proponents of Prop 8 use an outdated and stale argument that judges aren’t supposed to protect rights and freedoms. Prop 8 is about whether Californians are willing to amend the constitution for the sole purpose of eliminating a fundamental right for one group of citizens.

Fiction: If Prop 8 isn’t passed, people can be sued over personal beliefs.

Fact: California’s laws already prohibit discrimination against anyone based on race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. This has nothing to do with marriage.

Fiction: Pepperdine University supports the Yes on 8 campaign.

Fact: The University has publicly disassociated itself from Professor Richard Peterson of Pepperdine University, who is featured in the ad, and has asked to not be identified in the Yes on 8 advertisements.

Fiction: Unless Prop 8 passes, California parents won’t have the right to object to what their children are taught in school.

Fact: California law clearly gives parents and guardians broad authority to remove their children from any health instruction if it conflicts with their religious beliefs or moral convictions.

Until we, as a nation, and we, as gay people as well as their supporters, begin to say YES on this type of amendment you will keep the steel doors of discrimination impenetrable and our children will remain in the dark ages of their parents minds! Children should be taught about all the differences in our society and they should be presented in a positive light so they CAN be discussed at home. Communication is key here as well. Allow your kids to communicate with you without fear of repercussion.

I am certainly not gay, but this is pure discrimination against gay people. It's like not letting black people marry, or people over 50 marry. And I thought I lived in a society that accepted people for who they are. D<

Against it. People have rights and one of them is the right of expression. by marrying their same sex, they are expressing their beliefs. if the government passes this law it would be unconstitutional.
