The Progressive Left has never been diverse in their thinking when they use the Saul Alinskey approach

Those who you refer to as "Compassionate Open-Minded Progressives" refer to themselves as "Social Justice Warriors". They claim to be about free speech and equality when all they advocate for is censorship of opposing arguments and special privilege for those whom they deem "oppressed" by our "evil western society". Ignoring what they actually speak about, their movement and its tactics of intimidation, pressure, and extortion place a great threat on freedom of speech. They wish to create a world where so-called "oppressed" persons are able to force the majority to conform to their agendas. Those classified as "oppressors" must now "check their privilege" and everything they say must be said carefully and must pass through a politically correct filter. Get down and surrender, or they ostracize you (society will inevitably follow suit) and if you have a career worth losing; a name that can be tarnished, they will try to take that as well. Now, whether or not you agree with what they are saying is up to you to decide, but their methodology is troubling at best, dangerous at worst, and it is gaining traction and influence with those who hold positions of power.

Liberals are open to the arena of ideas until they realize there actually are other ideas; then they will mock, ridicule and call you names for daring to think differently.
