Can you tell the difference by taste of butter and margarine?

So a while back I bought something that said was BUTTER.  It was also priced like butter (expensive, compared to margarine).  But when I tasted it, the first thing that came to my mind was this does not taste like butter.  It tasted more like margarine.
Then I asked myself, 'waitaminute, can one actually tell the difference between butter and margarine just by tasting it?'

Butter tastes more natural while margarine has this artificial taste to it...something funky / chemical?  So when it didn't taste natural to me, I thought, this can't be butter!

Absolutely I can. But that doesn't mean I don't like margarine or other butter substitutes. Everything has it's time and place and reason.

It's kind of like burgers. blindfolded I absolutely can tell the difference between beef, lamb, turkey, chicken, fish, or any of the veggie burger substitutes. I personally would choose beef most of the time and enjoy that the most. But there are times and places I'll enjoy one of the others. And a veggie burger is never really going to taste the same as meat no matter what you do to it. But you can still enjoy some of them once in a while.
