Certain enviroments change people

I recently read a study on how when a person is in a certain enviroment that they change, or if they are exposed to that enviroment for an exteneded period of time they grow up a certain way.
The most obvious way to explain this is gangs.
Lets say your growing up in new york and there are gangs everywhere, your mom is a crack head and your dad beats your mom.
The study said based on those situations that person will grow up with addiction problems, violence, and trouble with autority and be in gangs.
now that is not specificaly what the study said, but that's how I would like to put it.
It could be anything, you grow up in a good christian home with two loving parents your going to grow up a good christian and be a good parent.
But on the other hand your enviroment could have to effect on you what so ever.
I disagree, I believe your surroundings and the situations that occur in your life will effect who you will become as an adult.
That's obvious, others seem to say otherwise. Saying that person has a choice. Well they do, but will that choice stay for the long run?

I will say yes, however, I think it's more correct to say the environment a person grows up in shapes them, rather than changes them. Your example of Christian parents is the most common. Ask yourself, how many religious people turned to religion in their adult years? I'm quite sure it's very few. Most religious people were indoctrinated during childhood and before the full development of critical thinking and reasoning. Either that, or they found God in the hospital, a prison, an AA meeting, or a rehab clinic (all places where Jesus can readily be found slithering about by those at the lowest point in their lives).

There are exceptions of course, but they are rare, hence they are exceptions.

agreed. i think that the people in your life and the situations you are exposed to help to mold you, although obviously certain genetic traits can make a person more prone to addictions and such. however, people aren't always affected by similar circumstances in the same way, i.e. some people with religious backgrounds embrace the way they were raised to think while others reject it and race to the other end of the ideological spectrum. so while each of our environments affect us, a specific environment won't necessarily guarantee a certain outcome.

I think the environment determines half of what a person is. The person's personality which is coded on a person's genes determines how the person will react to the environment. I consider that the other determinant.
