Children's Rights

If children are taught to embrace their privileged rights, how will they ever understand when they are in the wrong?

Hello Flo:

Welcome to the site..

Some people think of our rights as privileges, and that's why we're losing them.. Speaking as an ex child, I've always been able to distinguish between my behavior and my rights..

You, apparently, not so much.

Life is a balance and so is child rearing. We all want to raise kids who grow up understanding the real world and able to take care of themselves. To some extent knowing you have a right (like the right to not be touched inappropriately by a stranger) is a part of what they need to learn.

As a father raising two young boys I'll make this pledge to you... My kids will not grow up thinking they're "entitled". But likewise, they're not going to grow up victimized, or cheated, or alienated from society. They'll learn the balance.

I don't think we should confuse "rights" with what IS right. I went through that with my daughters when my state was under the control of an "Ultra-liberal" free legal group. I, as a parent, had few "rights". My mother was administrative assistant to the Chief Judge of the state and He told me that, regretfully, it was true. My 13 year old had the "right" to, pretty much, do as she wished ... much to HIS chagrin!

I'm a liberal, but, liberalism, like conservatism, can have its ridiculous radicals at times! Children should know their rights, should know WHAT is right, and the difference between the two! Regretfully, today, some of the children that can't differentiate between the two are 20-40 years old.

If you read what I said, I was in the office of the Chief Judge of the state who my mother worked for. HE said that "regretfully, she had the right to do pretty much as she wished", Such were the laws of that state at the time. He didn't like it any more than I! That was in the "Love and Peace" era. You know, Woodstock and Kent State etc. When ultra-liberals were making the rules ... I'd think you would love to hear me complain about "ultra-liberals?? We had our crazies too ... now we're under YOURS!

If the Chief Judge of the state tells you you can be locked up for interfering with your child's wishes ... whatcha gonna do?? THAT's where the adult was. Eventually, she worked out O.K.

Let me just ask for clarification, what do you mean by "privileged rights"?

Hello again,

When I was a child, NOBODY had to tell me that I had the RIGHT not to be hit.. It was something I KNEW from the git go.. It's part of my DNA. You knew it too. Everybody did.

Therefore, I maintain, FROM the CRIB a child CAN ascertain what his human rights are..
