Customized Babies?
New research have shown that babies can now be designed to have the parents' most desirable traits. This research was conducted to prevent diseases, but now the research is going towards designer babies. Although not yet perfected, in the coming year, researchers say they can determine babies' eye color, hair color, and more. Seems like Gataca is not too far from now. What do you guys think?

Think of eugenics but custom made. Eugenics was proven wrong because birth defects and mental illnesses can not be prevented (by killing those who already have it). But this will make it so that problems won't happen to people. No killing, just fixing. PERFECT! Also, you can make your baby look like someone famous... Side: Good idea
kay grl I am guessing upvoted me before I could add more to what I wrote, so I would assume she downvoted you. I would not up or down vote that comment just becuase I agree somewhat but somewhat not. I do not like the idea of a perfect looking child how can I compete with the ladies? wouldnt perfect babies make uncustomized people outcasts? Side: bad idea

It's people like you that make this world sick. So superficial, ignorant, and quite plainly, stupid. What don't you get about the world already being over populated? Sure save one life, so they can have kids, who can have kids, who can have kids, who can have kids..and so on..do you not realize that saving one life has the potential to create thousands more? Save that one life, and in the future you're killing many other lives. The world can't support so many people, not everyone is meant to survive. Where are your values if it really matters to you what your child looks like? It's so wrong, not natural, disgusting, and I really hope you don't plan on any type of reproduction, the world not only can't handle many more people, it can't handle dumb, destroying, ignorant, sick people like you. Yakeyglee(30). Sure the parents may agree with it but who are they to choose what their child looks like, how do you think the child will feel when he or she is older and knows that his or her parents chose how he or she was going to look. All the time parents say " we love you just the way you are" would mean absolutely nothing, parents are supposed to give unconditional love and care for their child, not once letting the appearance of their child being a factor. The world is full of diversity, the way it should be, keeping things interesting. I think this is sick, sick, sick.Even if parents can't have a healthy natural baby, they should still not be given the chance to. Sure that must suck not to be able to have your own kids, but the truth is that as a species we are over populated and if people can't have their own children, they should adopt! It's hard to put words down to describe exactly what makes me so strongly disagree with this, but my mind is telling me this is just no natural, it's wrong. Side: We should celebrate our differences
A strong argument can be made that humanity has reached the limits of evolution by natural selection which requires a somewhat limited gene pool in order to allow for gene mutations to arise and persist, without gene mutation we won't get the emergence of beneficial traits. Also, we are culturally averse to allowing the weak amongst us to die and often accommodate their procreation in a sense undermining our development as a species. In this sense customizing babies is an alternative to natural selection. It also seems like a hedge against Idiocracy. Side: Good idea
Well, that would be a great idea. It would also help to discover that they go out in this world to be healthy babies plus the fact that they will have advance intelligence would really be supercool. I think Superman is not really from planet Krypton but a designer baby himself. xDD. Side: Good idea
I say: why not? Imagine a world where everyone has access to this technology. Would all babies end up looking like the same, or at least very similar? I don't think so. I think this would actually contribute to end all the superficiality we have created. If everyone is beautiful, what's the definition of beauty? We wish for the things we cannot have, but if you can actually choose the color of your eyes, the story changes... If we are actually given the choice, I think we would get tired of it eventually. The only downside I can see is kids complaining to their parents: "Why did you make me naturally blonde? I don't like it and I have to keep on dyeing my hair black!" =P Side: Good idea

"Designer babies" is used as a buzz word to scare retarded people into hating genetic testing more. The fact is , no one wants more deformed , diseased babies, growing up and passing on their junk to their own children. Just admit it and lets have some gorgeous future babies being CUSTOMIZED!! oooh scary!! Side: Good idea

Just be another way of selectivity making uncustomized people outcasts in the long run. I mean it is fine for the health issues that a baby might have but making your baby look like what you want is wrong. Makes more ugly people in the world Pyg how are you gonna compete with the ladies when its you or the Adonnis next to you or the Adonnis next to him? etc etc Side: bad idea
same way i've always competed. 1. i'm no Brad Pitt, but i've been complemented by my looks quite a lot. 2. Brains. People love to hear my thoughts on an issue, and i know when to shut up if i'm going way over someone's head. 3. Humor. I love to make people laugh, and i usually succeed. I'm known as a pretty funny guy (my wit helps). 4. Psychology. I know how to talk to people about issues they may be having. I know how to read them and figure out what's exactly wrong. I also know how to fix their problems (usually). 5. I'm really good at massages. Trust me, that helps a shit load. Side: Good idea
Random is beautiful. Are we forgetting this? It's a rational step for humanity to want to decide everything, but sometimes things are better left to chance. I could not imagine some day in the future when I have kids and just staring at them and looking at them and realizing they were fake. Ugh, that would just be terrible. Side: bad idea

I think that birth should be a natural thing. Also, has anybody ever seen Gattaca? After seeing that movie, I think that everybody should be a totally natural baby, totally randomized traits, and totally equal to everybody else. So that we don't, in the words of Ethan Hawke playing Vincent - "They've perfected discrimination this time" Side: bad idea

It's a very bad idea, imagine 1000 customized babies that look like brad pit ? o.O Or Babies that look like barack Obama ? xD If parents can make a baby according to their desired traits for the baby it will be dull. Imagine parents taking care of a perfect child from young to old. They prolly will say 'Taking a child is so lame, NO KICK at all' ... They reallyu should leave babies alone. It is what nature gives them that make individuals unique and special. Side: bad idea

It's just unnatural, I mean sure it's great that people who can't have babies can all of a sudden have one but come on, we're gonna turn into some weird clone things. How much do they even know about this? What if there's a malfunction? What will they do? How will they cure it? Side: bad idea

Terrible idea. Evolution has done a great job in nature as it is. We shouldn't fuck around with it. Evolution will determine what traits are inevitably best for us and which can be eliminated. Leaving the decision to ourselves is just stupid. It's like reverse genocide. Side: bad idea

I have no opposition to use this new innovation to improve babies health, but as we take desirable traits of the parents, the babies will become less and less unique, as time progresses. Humans are humans because of our uniqueness and we should not take this away. Side: bad idea

So i've read alot of debates and i know this one is old but i wanted to see if anyone else got that if designer babies were worldwide and people could select their childrens traits then there would be no reason for sex. I see the upside for people like teenagers but not for adults because the main reason we have sex is to procreate and if we are all using IVF to make 'Barbie' then what would be the point? Side: Bad idea
extremely bad idea. you do remember that chilren grow up to be adults, and as we all know if you're raised by a pair of jackasses and live in a community of jackasses the likelyhood of you NOT being a jackass is very slim, but if you add on the option of your parents being able to custom make you, you're pretty much a jackass with athletic ability or supersmarts. there's also the appearance thing: noboday like ugly, and if something goes wrong you cant blame genetics this time, even though the possibility of people being less ugly might increase. that still doesnt change the fact that everyone sees children as things that can be manipulated and should be seen and not heard-they're not animals. most of our most promising and intelligent beings are children- if you go around changing stuff just so its easier on you, yet again, we'll have a bunch of degenerate uglies stalking around. Side: bad idea
1. I don't believe in evolution, your assumption is wrong. 2. Why would I believe in something that coincides with what I believe? 3. Define trolling. If what I am doing is "trolling", then why should I stop? Why should I stop expressing my opinion and exercising my freedom of speech? 4. Please don't tell me what to do. I will do as I please. Even if I was a Troll then you still would have no control over my actions or my rights. Side: bad idea
