This false dichotomy is based on the incorrect notion that free will is the ability to make choices without causes. In fact, free will is simply the ability to make choices. Every time someone gives a reason for their decision, they have articulated the causal factors in their decision, but they still made the decision. Though there are many things we do not choose, including the kind of person we fundamentally are, we still choose between alternatives, on a regular basis. Causation is the reason there are reasons to our choices. Imagine the alternative, where you make decisions based on no causes whatsoever, no reason, no determining factor. That would not be free will, it would t even be choice. It would be the opposite. Side: Determinism

@KJVPrewrath You can have both if you are the one determining the determinism. But since you can't determine everything or even anything that goes into your "decision making" free will is impossible. You can't decide what environment you are brought up in or it's conditions, you can't decide your level of intelligence or what kind of nutrition you receive as a child, you can't determine the chemical balance of your brain the chain of events that occur around you in the objective cause and effect universe which causes you to respond in various ways and effects your thought and behaviour based on what your prior experiences taught you, and how you are wired psychologically. If you have a chemical imbalance in your brain that causes you to be perpetually pissed off, then you will over react at the slightest little thing. If you are wired the opposite way you might forgive someone for raping your dog and poisoning your cat. The only difference between the two extremes is neurological wiring and the presence or absence of certain neuro-chemicals. Side: Determinism
