While I enjoy a neat Jim Beam in the evening and I'll rib another man for his choice of a cosmopolitan, neither tobacco nor alcohol makes a man. Some men are alcoholics and chain smoke themselves to death, this is hardly "manly". Some men don't drink or smoke (and for the record, I have an automatic distrust of someone who doesn't drink. Some people don't drink for good reason but I take that on a case by case basis.) Some males drink whiskey, smoke cigars, drive trucks, work out, and have absolutely despicable moral character. Do I consider an appreciation and functional knowledge of whiskey or cigars to be something of a refinement? Yes, but not a requirement. Side: No
