Do illegal immigrants deserve amnesty?

Executive actions on immigration allow immigrants that meet certain requirements to apply for amnesty. Should they be allowed to do so or should all undocumented immigrants be deporated if discovered?

They are obviously not going anywhere so I think that is better if they become functioning part of society....

This hits the nail right on the head. Not only do we have an emotional ground for granting them amnesty, but also common sense. Like it is said in the Russell-Einstein Manifesto , if we are going to have nuclear weapons then we need to stop thinking of differing nations as separate entities. We build a fence, we create disaster. The consequences are immeasurable.

The background to this problem is that our corporations are the reason that they are coming up here because of so called "free trade agreements" their businesses cannot compete with ours, and it is suppressing their economy.

The foreground of this problem is that there are estimated to be so many illegal immigrants in the country right now that it is impossible to send them all back without spending an insane amount of tax dollars, especially when they have children who would then qualify for government support. According to a 2010 report by Center for American Progress and Rob Paral and Associates it cost $23,480 to deport a single illegal immigrant, and it would cost $285 billion to deport all of the illegal immigrants in the United States. Keep in mind that this number only factors in apprehension, detention, legal proceedings, and transportation. It would also cost even more money for the individuals with legal children who would then qualify for extensive government assistance in a number of ways.

What does the average American do to "deserve" citizenship? Part with their mother within a given set of latitudes/longitudes?

Go all the way back to humans living together in hunter/gatherer groups scattered thinly over the world. A new baby was most likely seen as an asset for the long term survival of the group. Membership in the group was a given. The connection was to the group and not to the spot they were standing on that day.

There are at least two categories of illegal immigrants. There are those who want to join our group, sharing in and contributing to our prosperity.

There are those who want to take advantage of our prosperity but to contribute nothing. All we need do is distinguish the one and reject the other.

Aren't the same categories applicable to American citizens?

So many are doing the laborious work that the rich suburbanites just are too lazy to do. Give them amnesty. They work hard and deserve a break.

Deserve - No. Should they receive it - Yes.

Heres why.

1. Most people understand the impracticality of locating and deporting millions of people.

2. Most people want illegal immigration to stop before amnesty is given.

IF they have jobs, and are paying taxes and do not have serious criminal records, there is a place for them to remain, without benefit of voting until they become citizens. Further they are not granted a place in the front of the immigration line. Deserving or not they are subject to the generosity of Americans.

Deserve - No. Should they receive it - Yes.

That. Words right out of my mouth.

Further they are not granted a place in the front of the immigration line.

What exactly do you mean by this?

Side: No, send them home

No, they do not "deserve" amnesty, they did nothing to "deserve" it. However, amnesty is what they will receive because logistically speaking, it is far too hard to deport millions of people and it is even harder to make sure they stay out of the USA.
