You need to care about what people think of you, to a certain extent. Organised society will grind to a halt if everyone does what they damn well please without worrying at all about what others will think. You, personally, will also not thrive in society if you don't care about the marks your teacher gives you, your work evaluation, your spouse's interest towards you, etc. The trick is to figure out which things you should care about, and which things you shouldn't. Somebody you know thinks you have bad taste in music - who cares. You're an aspiring singer and your audience thinks you have bad taste in music - you definitely should care.
