Hell yes they scare me. Richard Dawkins compares religious indoctrination of childer as tanamount to child abuse and I agree. What a terrible thing to instill a child with supernatural beliefs that only serve to segregate people and create fear and suspicion in adulthood. All over what? Some goofy god guy that has somehow managed to propagate from the ages of mysticism and ignorance. Religion is shameful.

Any time somebody makes an ill-informed decision (especially if they're in some position of power), then there's a risk they'll do something stupid. Since religious organizations can claim any terrible thing to be true (gays have no rights, burn the witch, hey let's go on a crusade, etc.) and don't have to back it up with any well informed argument, they can get away with anything. Needless to say the United Church (or insert other liberal religious org.) isn't a particularly frightening place, but there are many out there who are extremely illogical and malicious in their beliefs. I'm scared of any organization that's unpredictable and has a history of violence, such as some religious groups.

They can try to influence politics, but that's about it..at least, here in America. Thankfully, we don't live in a theocracy and have a constitutional separation of church and state. No one can tell you what to do. Well, they can, but you can always choose to disregard. If you just fall in line with what they say, you're as responsible for your oppression as they would be.
Yes, but when an islamic extremist sect flies into an icon of the modern westernised world, and incites a very acute response, I would assume that religious organisations are significanly affecting your politics.

We don't respond in a religious manner, we respond to their acts, not the beliefs that drove them. It can be argued that their motivation wasn't religious, but political, because of our policies and meddling in foreign affairs for the last few decades. "Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large groups" is apropos.
Religious organizations only scare me when they try to convert or influence others to follow them or are intolerant of other people's views on that religion and others. Also any religious organization that requires you to donate money is terrifying and just plane wrong and not that religious.
Um....yes! If I ever moved down to the south I'd be terrified of almost all the white people down there! The F-ing KKK terrorizing those of the non-supior race and shit! DX

No. Only because I can pass for a Christian though, and I live in a majority Christian country. Anytime a large group of people starts chasing around an imaginary father figure in the sky its kind of scary though. I mean if they believe that, what else will they believe?

well, all organizations can be scary if taken to the extreme (religious, PeTA, Marxists). but i wouldn't say religious organizations in general scare me. extreme organizations do of course (no matter the belief is).
No more than the Wicked Witch of the West scares me. Ridicule & shun, that's my MO for the religious.
Ridicule & shun? Must you ridicule & shun those who believe differently than you do? Am I mistaken or aren't you the man who has complained about this site not offering true debate? I just read your profile and your responses to those debates you chose to involve yourself in. I'm sorry to tell you this but it seems to me, when given the opportunity to register an opinion, your responses do not indicate that you long for the type of debate that suits you...whatever that may be. They indicate that you're looking for a fight rather than an honest and fair exchange of opinions.

Yeah really - Wicked Witch of the West? Are you too good/smart for religion?

It's simple, this site isn't worth his time. It's too simple, so he posts simple replies... But then again, is he not spending his time here?
I think you may have hit the nail squarely on the head.
Sure. If you'd like to debate the voracity of your religious beliefs, it's more than welcome. Go!
How strange that you missed the point of everything I brought to your attention and answered with a challenge that has nothing to do with this debate. Great tactic, if you can get someone to bite that age-old bait. AMEN.
Sorry if I missed the point. Could you put it more succinctly?
You must not have grown up in the South.

All religions have an agenda that is not always as closely related to it's origins as we may like to believe. It is like any other institution in this way. So can Religion be scary? Sure, just as public education or political parties can be. If you hand over your individuality, your ability to think for yourself, that's the price you pay. But let's call that what it is...'user error'.
I am firm in my established beliefs and in general religious organizations do not scare me, at least here in the United States. Some of the stranger religions seem a bit odd and have some scary origins and practices, like some of the animalistic, Voodoo and sacrificial religions in the Caribbean and Central & South America but they are usually very unorganized. The Wiccans and Skin Heads can be a little bit intimidating but again, they don't seem to organized and don't have too much in the way of funding. Abroad, the Wahabbis, Hamas and Al-Qaeda are scary of course. They have no regard for human life. They will kill their own kind and fellow Muslim. Their hate is so ingrained and entrenched. There is no reasoning with these terrorists, they wear no military uniforms and use unconventional tactics to kill innocent people. They have no conscience. That is scary!

Religion is something for the weak to believe in, the strong to put energy into, and it gives people without anything to do something. people are like sheep. they need something to follow. sheep are easily scared, so are people, but it is only 'scary' if taken to the extremes of the religion. i.e. terrorists. no. religious organizations dont scare me. but my overly religious parents do.
