Rights exist but are not properly implemented which often lead to these speculations; The UN adopted 'Universal Declaration of Human Rights' so obviously they exist;but to be honest, they are violated in most countries-Syria comes first to the mind.

People are good at composing and pronouncing noble sounding declarations of rights for mankind, but not so good at ensuring they're enforced. From the Bible to the United Nations we have all read what our ''human rights'' are, or should be. However, take a look around you. History teaches us that the thought provoking quote from the French philosopher Alphonse Karr is oh so true;- ''the more things change, the more they stay the same''. We think we have become more civilized and sophisticated as a species, whereas all we've achieved is more effective ways to kill and mistreat each other.

The concept of rights has taken hold as never before in history.

This statement might be uttered with equal truth in the ancient Greek Senate and the House of Lords today. There has been throughout the history of civilizations an inexorable movement towards the broadening of rights, as well as bestowing of rights to more and more groups of individuals.

Looking only to the bumps in the path with complaint, obscures the progress of our journey.

They do if a society or community creates them. I have the right to (semi) free speech because western society has created it for me. If I were a woman in Saudi Arabia I wouldn't have that right according to the Saudi society.

Side: Yes.

The idea of human rights is subjective, not objective. I think it's a silly idea that rights are universal because some people obviously don't deserve rights, for example convicted criminals do not have the right to freedom of movement.

If rights don't exist, you don't have the right to say that. ;)
