Do you agree that Hockey is the Best Sport in North America?

OK...I admit: I mioght be a bit biased. I've played hockey from the Junior level at age 13 up thorugh college at the Universituy of Michigan. But I really DO think it is the best, coolest, fastest, sexiest, toughest sport out there. How about you? Agree? Or disagree? Why?

Please check out this link before posting any replies, as it makes all my points very nicely.

No, I like playing hockey but watching it is so boring. You never see anyone score for prolonged periods of time. I think that basketball is the best sport to watch and play because it is so eventful. American football is also very fun to play and watch. Soccer is fun to play but boring to watch. Baseball is both boring to watch and play while lacrosse is just plain dumb.

It's a great sport to play, but watching it is not for everyone. Check out these reasons:

1. There are usually around 3 goals in an average game. There are a lot more missed opportunities and less chances of getting excited as it is so fast paced.

2. It is hard for the average viewer to keep track of the puck. People move around too fast and it is unclear who has the puck.

3. There is no build-up. The goals are scored kind of randomly. A team can not be "close to scoring" for longer than 5-15 seconds. The goals do add up, but it isn't a journey to score a goal.

4. It isn't exciting fantasy-sports wise.

I think football is better to watch because it build up a lot better. It is a lot slower pace so fans and teams have longer to get nervous/excited and set the tone. Touchdowns do not come randomly, but are often the result of a long drive where every play is fun to watch. And often, to get the adrenaline going, there are big pick plays or deep receptions which change the pace.

It is also more fun to think about strategies the teams are using and the adjustments they are making. It is a lot more obvious in football than hockey.

I have to agree with you on some of your points.

Hockey indeed loses a LOT when watched on TV. Unless of course you have a big-ass flat hi-def 60" flat screen. But still, TV does not do justice to the speed and awesome contact in the sport. You also do not see what is going on, like the line changes and the action away from the puck. Yeah, the puck CAN be hard to follow. (Remember a few years ago when Fox tried that "puck tracker" gizmo? LOL. Looked on TV like some guy was in the stands following the puck around with a flashlight. Not good.

Most of what you call "build up" comes in a couple situations: like on a power play--or a penalty kill, depending on which team you're for. Also toward the end of the game when a team is down a goal and pulls the goalie. And of course during the shoot-out when the game is tied after regulation play. This is where knowing the sport helps. There is build-up when a certain line comes in on a change. T Here are always certain match-ups between specific opposing players that are fun to watch. Or when a goon is coming in to do what they are hired to do, like when an opposing hot scorer is getting "too fast and easy" like my ex-coach used to say. LOL. And I see buld-ups when you know a fight is brewing.

I also think playoff NHL hockey is the best! The speed and intensity is kicked-up at least a couple notches. AS it is in the NBA during the playoffs. The regular NHL season is basically a survival contest.

There IS good fantasy hockey to be had--I am in a league myself! But this is, granted, for the serious fans.

I love football. But the NFL games have become almost ruined because of all the commercials. Did you know that in the average NFL game there is only about 17 minutes of real action? Hockey beats that all to hell. Less commercials, more flow, less stoppage. In a 60-minute NHL game you get about 45 minutes of action. SO we're talking TRIPLE that of the NFL. It;s also easier to SEE the players in hockey as they are not hidden by all that equipment. The helmets don't hide them as much as in football. More personal. The NFL is like a machine of robots sometimes.

Strategy? Again, the more you know hockey the more you can see the strategy. They do run plays, like the NFL, and we do have more substitutions with the line changes. Each line has its own specialty and strong point, and there is a strategy of when to deploy them. But I see what you're saying, for the casual hockey fan. Hockey does demand that you pay closer attention than in football. When your team is down by one goal or the game is tied and regulation play is drawing to close,,,man, you can't even blink or you might miss a goal!

But overall hockey is the least enjoyable of the three major sports to watch on TV--for the casual hockey fan. I agree. But I also think that in person it is the BEST to watch. Football is actually better on TV! What with the instant replay. And the action is not moving away from you as it is for a football fan in the stands a lot of times. Football in person demands great seats. In hockey arenas, a far higher percentage of the seats are good.

Thanks for your post!!
