Do you agree with spanking children? No, I do not. Note, it is amazing how many parents become 'enlightened' about the issue once children hit puberty--could this possibly have any relation to the fact the child becomes significantly bigger & stronger quickly while the adults simultaneously are becoming older & weaker? As a matter of course it is far preferable to explain why X pattern of behavior is bad, or that Y pattern is good. This teaches children to be moral as a result of a deeper understanding of how their actions affect others and their surroundings, rather than out of fear. It teaches respect for principles, rather than mere respect for laws. This, according to Kohlberg's stages of moral development, is a more sophisticated view of morality (Source 1). This of course doesn't mean that one doesn't need to punish transgressions, or maintain dominance in the relationship with their child, because one certainly should still do these things!
