Do you suffer from phobias ?

I seem to suffer from many phobias - I am scared of flying in paticular , so i wont fly. I dont fancy drowning at sea either , so i avoid long sea voyage. And i dont like the thought of drowning in a tsunami while im taking a shower , so i live away from the beach. I dont like the thought of being in a earthquake or victim to terrorist attacks , and being crushed by tall buildings so i dont live in the city. But now i fear being crushed or buried alive in a sinkhole.I have seen what happens with sinkholes. I dont go deep caving for the same reason. When i go to the beach , i dont fear being eaten by sharks as i think karmicly i dont really over-abuse their territory , that and i swim behind other swimmers.I sometimes get clostrophobic , feeling trapped , if i cant get through a door ,or get told i cant move, even sleeping in clothes ,  i hate confinement , yet sometimes i feel like closeting myself away from the world.  I  am a sociable friendly person yet at times so withdrawn hating to be part of the human race and its flaws. I have phobias about germ warfare , but share a hug with strangers , and at times forget to use my elbow to hit the button at traffic light crossings. Basically , except for the fear of flights, which i just recently knocked back two free holidays , one to china , I would say my other phobias dont hinder my life.

Some people are terrified of heights or open spaces or numbers etc

Some people have phobias about beards or feet or shaking hands etc

Do you or someone you know have a phobia and how does it affect your/ their life?

I was going to compile a list so i did a bit of research on phobias. There is far too many to list so here is a link to a large list http://phobialist.com/index.html

Nope.

I know a few people with a few mild phobias... but nothing where it affects my life or even theirs so much.

If I ever found out I had a phobia then I would do whatever I can to overcome it. I don't understand them. The closest understanding of any phobia I can get is heights - when you're standing on the edge of a cliff and you look down - I'm guessing that's how all acrophobians feel on any heights.

I used to be scared of heights but i tackled that. I still get a bit giddy on a cliff edge though.

I used to have a fear of swallowing pills. I didn't overcome it until I was 15 years old.

My parents didn't understand it because I could eat huge bites of food, yet the smallest pill would make me gag and barf. I didn't even want to touch them.

I can't really call it "Phagophobia" (fear of swallowing, eating etc.) because I wasn't afraid to eat or swallow, it was just the pills. And I could take liguid medication so it wasn't "Pharmacophobia" (fear of medication)

I think it was just something in my head that snowballed from an early age. I couldn't find a name for fear of pills. If you can let me know.

I overcame it by just doing it. It helped to take them with soda because I liked soda and the carbonation made it so that I couldn't feel the thing sliding down my throat.

Now I can take pills just fine. But I still get a little nervous when taking some bigger pills.

My mum had the same problem with my sister . She would give her frozen peas to swallow to try and get her used to swallowing pills . The peas would always go down just fine. Now at the age of 33 my sis still has trouble getting pills down. I will check out and get back to you if a name for this does exist....................ok im back. It is actually recogonised as Pill Anxiety. Here is a helpful link relating to this fear of swallowing pills : http://www.epinions.com/content_4818509956

Zombies. Basically I don't want to be eaten alive.... so anything that would result in me being eaten alive, or tortured in any way, I'm afraid of.

Terrorists, plane crashes, spiders, et cetera... I can handle.

Side: No

I absolutely love the SAW movies.....but i would not like to be a victim of torture. Zombies dont scare me as my zombie-killing-wannabe son is apparrently ever prepared for the day of the dead.,All you need is a sharp machette and a good aim , take the head clean off and youll be fine.:) Spiders , i love , tho the thought of having them lay eggs in and hatch in me is the only real scare i have about terrorist attacks. Planes , if i was meant to fly then id be a bird.....thats my excuse.:)

I'm horribly afraid of being disliked. That's actually my worst fear, as silly as it sounds. I also used to suffer from hadeophobia: Fear of hell, Pediophobia: Fear of dolls, Peccatophobia: Fear of sinning, Monophobia: Fear of solitude, Atephobia: Fear of ruin(I suppose I still sort of have that). I have ocd, and it used to center around religious things when I was younger(in case you're wondering about the fear of hell and sinning).

Nowadays, I have paraphobia: Fear of sexual perversion, as well as a more general fear of being a terrible person. Yepyep. Ocd is fun, she said sarcastically. Of course, the fears of being a horrible person may really be fears of being disliked, since people don't generally like horrible people...I don't know. I'm still trying to decide whether or not those are two separate fears.

I also have chronophobia: Fear of time, and Enissophobia: Fear of being criticised. And whatever "fear of executions" is, I have that. x] I've always found executions deeply disturbing. I also have mild arachnaphobia and Ophidiophobia(fear of snakes).

So...there's all my psychoses in one little spot. o_o

You know, I've actually ranted to a friend of mine about how church camp hellfire sermons are emotional abuse. I mean, they honestly are. If someone told a child that they would set them on fire one day if they didn't believe the right doctrine or didn't do the right things, it would be considered horribly wrong. Yet if you throw religion into the mix, it's somehow okay to traumatize someone. Although actually I do understand it: The adults believe it is a real threat, and who knows? I certainly don't. So they are trying to prevent that from happening to their kid, and I understand that, but it's emotional abuse nonetheless. It's like those crazy people who kill their children because they think they are saving them somehow. Less extreme, yes, but the same basic logic.

OH YES I DO. YUK YUK YUK , i dont blame you one bit. I have had one flu shot in my life . YUK. Never again . Sometimes its better to build up your own immunity by sweating it out. And on those cases where it , the flu ,has become life threatening , i am curious how many of those persons had actually had their flu shots.

I'm afraid of clowns and elevators to an extent, but I don't have phobias to them. I simply find clowns to be creepy and I don't want to be near them, but I will if I have to. And even though I always fear getting stuck in an elevator (again....) I still use them regularly since I live on the 6th floor of my dorm. There's no way I'd use the stairs every time.

Side: yes

The icon i used for another debate , is a pic of a happy non-descriptive clown. I find clowns can be really evil looking. Lifts frighten the crap out of me , as i get clostrophobic at the thought of confinement or being trapped..but i still will travel in them also as some places such as centrepoint tower has too many stairs or no option to use the stairs unless in an emergancy..

Spiders. I don't mind them, just as long as they can't touch me.

Flying figs its 4.35am. Ive been on cd for ages .Seems im an insomniac.....or is it that im scared i will miss out on something? Or was i tooo afraid to sleep after all this talk of bugs in bodies , which had me also think of the guy who had a nest of Redback spiders in his dreadlocks.Which made me think of how i dread dreadlocks........and locks.

Side: incywincyspder

Yes, Several, in fact--although I'm nowhere near as bad as Adrian Monk. But only one of them I can not justify. Every night, I must check to see if the oven is on. I'm afraid of it burning down the house. But, our oven has been broken for months! I can not explain why I have that. But, one of my phobias, tocophobia (look it up), I see as I good thing. There is enough of that already.
