Do you think people should respect religion more than they do?

Do you think that society in general has lost respect for religions and what they try to teach?

I believe that people should respect the religious beliefs (or lack thereof) of others, regardless of whether they agree with said beliefs. This works both ways, so fundamentalists should be required to respect the views of atheists as well.

For a religious individual, there is a tendency to identify oneself more by ones religion than ones ethnicity, for example. It's already not acceptable to be disrespectful towards others due to their race; religion is far closer to home for many individuals, and I believe that should be respected every bit as much as (if not more than) the individuals race and/or culture.

In other words, slurs against judaism should be treated every bit as severely as usage of 'the n word.' When you drop an n bomb, you disparage the individual due to his or her skin color and association with a culture that they may or may not identify with. When you wax anti-semitic, you disparage the jewish individuals very identity.

That said, I would have to oppose any legislation to that effect, as it seems the type of thing that would end up twisted horribly a couple generations down the road. Even barring that, I would oppose it because the US government already has its hooks into far too many things.

Which isn't to say that there is a problem with criticisms of organized religions in general, and even specific organized religions, but the line should be drawn at the point where you're attacking individuals (even indirectly) due to their faith (or again, lack thereof).

How does religion deserve ridicule?

As a standalone concept, it doesn't. Even if someone kept, say, an objectively filthy and disgusting living room, it's not really anyones business to go and criticize that. It's a little gross, but also totally private.

Religion as we know it, however, doesn't even come close to anything private. Spirituality, maybe. Faith, maybe. But generally religion is a just greedy, capitalistic, extremely public enterprise that peddles faith to make money. And it is my sincere belief that any public company deceives people into trading money (tax free) for eternal salvation (under the threat of eternal damnation) - including people forcibly indoctrinated into this scam as children - deserves ridicule, and for obvious reasons.

The Western world already is far too politically correct.

In almost any definition of respect there is an implication of admiration, regard, and/or esteem. Religion does not deserve that.

Side: No

Respect is earned, not freely given. When religion ceases to be childish, corrupt, and wrong ill respect it.
