Yes stop signs mean stop. It is to prevent collisions with crossing pedestrians or perpendicular car crashes. Stop means stop. This was idiotic.

Well, what else does a stop sign mean? Unless you cannot read, S T O P spells 'STOP'. Nothing else. I genuinely fear for road users if you misinterpret the stop sign as anything else; they are there for safety reasons.

A Stop sign does mean to stop. There are drivers who learned the hard way by receiving a ticket for not obeying a Stop sign.

I always assumed that it meant "Set the overdrive please.", because all caps words are usually acronyms
