Sometimes, there are no words to express the immense lack of intelligence. Hence, the birth of curse words. Although sometimes there are words that can express what we want. But we continue to curse. That is pure ignorance. I say avoid curse words because there are great chances that there is a word for what you want to express. Especially while writing. When writing you have time to think and search. Side: yes
A painter once told me something to the effect that profane words are fillers equivalent to useless trash. He also said that if a person uses profanity numerous times when talking to you, say 20% of the time, you are only getting 80% of the real content. Furthermore, with the extensive volume of words in language and the realization that we have an opportunity to utilize them instead of using fillers, it may lead one to assume that it’s a lack of knowledge to the words available for alternatives. What he said stuck with me and I can honestly say it had an affect seeing as how I don’t ‘curse’ even half as much as I used to, probably less than 1% of the time to add emphasis in particular situations or when telling jokes. I do believe that extensive use of profanity when a person is engaging in simple, unemotional conversation denotes a lack of education or knowledge of alternative words. According to World English Dictionary, the word ‘ignorant’ fits that description: “1. lacking in knowledge or education; unenlightened.” I don’t really care for this to turn into a semantics game; I realize that there are many definitions of the same word. But this is what I believe: Ignorance denotes lack of education or knowledge, stupidity denotes lack of education or knowledge due to an inability to learn. So although using profanity does show ignorance, one is not stupid for using it. There is hope yet, pick up a dictionary and learn how to better articulate what you are thinking into your words. It's also easy to call for civility when you have dealt with problem people, and you realize it’s better to be responsible and idyllic, than to stoop to their level. Just because people resort to disrespect doesn’t mean one needs to counter with the same. Such reasoning is flawed. Side: yes

It doesn't make you look ignorant, but swearing puts people at a disadvantage because of first impressions. When I read swearing on this site, I immediately think negative thoughts and it makes people look less intelligent. It also makes me think that the person swearing was a cocky little so-and-so when they were young. Lots of these assumptions turn out to be wrong but it puts anyone at a disadvantage when it comes to first impressions. But that's just me, because I've grown up in a non-swearing environment. However just coz people swear, it doesn't make me like them less. Almost all my friends swear on a regular basis and it doesn't make me value them less - they can say what they want as long as it's not offencive. That's another thing: swearing is very in-your-face and threatening when put in a certain context. No offence! Side: Yes

"Cursing is the refuge of the incompetent," my grandfather used to tell me. Basically, if you can't think of anything more compelling or salient to express yourself with than an expletive, you look ignorant. At least, in my eyes. PS - I just joined this board, and seeing people answer debate questions with personal attacks and board in-jokes/rants cheapens the intellectual appeal of the site by quite a good bit. I think it would be wonderful if people just answered the question asked. PPS - please do not respond to my PS directly. It will both be ironic and contradictory to my point. Feel free to talk about whether or not cursing makes you look ignorant, though. Side: yes

Honestly, i change my mind if i consider you ignorant when you curse. You consider me annoying. So i have the right to perceive someone as i please...right? I believe it is not what you say but how you say it. Hellno2012 and Sunset both curse in the same sentence over and over and over. They say the word "shit" again and again. And while they belittle me, i think they look foolish. You haven't done that but if you do, then you do look ignorant. And what i do find ignorant about you, Merlin, and Sunset is that you guys think i support murder and rape. I do say rape can be a good thing but it is not always bad. You guys can't seem to handle my views and the only way you guys resort is ignorance. Side: No
Honestly, i change my mind if i consider you ignorant when you curse. That makes no sense... Hmmm? You do that a lot... you know that, right? Hellno2012 and Sunset both curse in the same sentence over and over and over Now that's just a fucking, down right bunch of bullshit if I've ever fucking heard any! ;) They say the word "shit" again and again You said shit... hehehe Side: yes

Swearing alone does not make you look ignorant. It might make you look crude or inappropriate depending on the situation...making you look uneducated, unrefined etc. I suppose a lot depends on when you swear, to who and how you sound... I'd be more worried about how I look, how I carry myself and my vocabulary than if I let a few curse words slip... Side: No
No, but a little advice, if you start to swear at someone in an argument, it gives the impression you have run out of good things to say, now you are just going back to using basic insults, in other words, you lost. Avoid swearing in debates. Insulting people? Go right ahead! Side: No

Honestly, to me swear words are only words that sounded rude to certain people. I don't think that anyone should be totally offended. It's a way to express emotion. {~Honestly if I didn't swear enough I might be dead. You never know.~} Also I heard that swearing can help pain tolerance. I don't see why you shouldn't be allowed to stop. It doesn't make any sense for anyone to get really mad about it. Would you rather someone was really rude to you if someone wasn't using swears or not? Well either way it is insulting so it shouldn't matter. I also don't get why they don't allow it in schools. Freedom of speech in the United States is protected by the First Amendment to the United States Constitution and by many state constitutions and state and federal laws. I think part of the reason swears are a big deal is because everyone is making a big fuss about them. {~Psychology mode. XD~} I think one of the main reasons kids and adults make a big deal is because it has a kind of, how do I put this, a certain adult-sounding kind of thing. And then kids use them to make themselves feel older. If we didn't make a big deal maybe then kids wouldn't feel the urge to use them as much. The fact that it makes you look like a fool! Well then! I honestly think that is a huge stereotype and that it should be stopped. Who ever said that it made you dumb? That is because of history and all of these conquerors who overruled some people who used words like that. Also if you call swearing making you seem dumb. Then you are saying that I seem dumb half of the time. It's like saying your hair color affects your intelligence. Also even if you don't believe swear words give you stress relief it's actually a proven fact that it does. It helps with pain also. It also helps with health. Better circulation and endorphins. {~Honestly better than taking drugs.~} Swearing shouldn't be that big of a deal. And also. If someone has to wait until they are 21 they will overuse it in their adult life and start the cycle all over again. It's kind of like binge drinking where a kid who can finally drink goes out and drinks way to much and kills someone in a car accident. Side: No
