Insofar as one can measure the significance of something based upon its having an impact, then yes poetry does still matter. The question of course has a certain degree of subjectivity based upon artistic preference and appreciation. Given though that a considerable number of people still make livings from writing and performing poetry I would contend that it remains relevant.

I would additionally note that while page poetry has declined in its popularity other forms of poetry are growing in popularity (for example, slam poetry).

Poetry is not just matter of writing verses with a suitable rhyme. The aim is to express the feelings and emotions that is relatable to people and present versatile thoughts through the beauty of literature for its edification. Poetry not only touches your heart but also becomes the means to say great things in little words, which is the need of today's mechanical and fast going generation. Art will remain forever, it will be remembered till posterity and yes it matters at different walks of our lives.

It matters as much now as it ever did? But what does that mean?

Well, it's in songs, sayings, monuments, and various forms of art. It can be enjoyed in all those things, or it can just as easily be overlooked or ignored. It has value, but it is not life essential other than the fact expression and art may be considered life essential for their enrichments.

Poetry does not have temporal value. It is what it is for all time. Therefore, poetry cannot still matter, for it matters no more and no less than it ever has.

Side: No

I have to agree with you. I'd consider something to matter if it was either a necessity in your life or a detriment to it.

On the scale of 'needs' poetry is pretty low.

If you were correct schools around the U.S. teach you the inside and outside of poetry. We do not need it but for the way for someone to practice or increase their rhetorical skills then poetry is a good choice. Schools still teach it.
