Does the Boston Marathon Show Poor Defensive Strategy in America's Law Enforcement?

At the moment having not received the full facts it certainly looks that way witnesses have said they saw a man in the area carrying many rucksacks, why did no-one question him? What's interesting is unless anything has happened since I last saw the news is that no-one has claimed responsibility yet, terrorists are usually taking credit for this type of thing straight away.

I think it is far too soon to be drawing conclusions yet, particularly on the basis of retrospective hearsay. Witness statements are notoriously unreliable, and furthermore I quite frankly would not like to live in a country where carrying a couple of rucksacks is grounds to violate my right to privacy. There are numerous reasons why someone could be carrying rucksacks around. I visited NYC recently and was wandering around with a couple of bags trying to find my lodging. Should someone have stopped me, searched my possessions, and interrogated me for that? If something like that alone becomes grounds for reasonable suspicion then I think we are in trouble.

Whenever something like this happens, tragic though it is, the first response of the fearful is to hand over their rights for an illusion of security. The truth is, we could give up those rights but doing that would not ultimately make us safer. There is only so much you can do to protect yourself, and the rest is chance. Perhaps law enforcement could have done more, but the case presented so far does not strike me as being even remotely valid.

"Witness statements are notoriously unreliable"

I'll remember that next time someone wants to call up a witness testimony in court.

otherwise I agree with you.

Supporting Evidence: Bomb squads are recognizable. (cityofls.net)

I think a few months went by before Al-Qaeda took credit for 9/11.

Yes, especially because the bombsquad was there on a "drill" looking for bombs (probably not expecting to find one).

The Marathon was a soft target that was low risk and America hasnt had mass bombings like that recently. If anything it would be more likely to have a mass shooting over a bombing. That area is impossible to secure to the fullest and they did their best and thier response time was fantastic so no there were no flaws, they arent superman with foresight.

Side: No

It was an extremely soft spot for anyone to hit. You wouldnt really expect a bomb to go off the way it did at the marathon.
