Does the world need nuclear energy?

Discussion on the use of nuclear energy in the world.

I believe nuclear energy is justifiable and it should be expanded. I believe we should try to diversify our sources of energy and nuclear energy has proved to be a feasible source. While I do believe nuclear energy can pose a few threats, I think if it is handled appropriately, it is very safe.

We should harness underwater turbine energy. The ocean is huge and we wouldn't have to create dangerous nuclear power plants.

Modern nuclear plants aren't really particularly dangerous though, at least not as much as they used to be. A catastrophic failure like Chernobyl is nearly impossible with modern designs. In almost every failure scenario possible with a modern nuclear power plant, the reaction will terminate due to the nature of the failure.

While I don't have hard data, I'd expect enough underwater turbines to replace nuclear energy would also impact ocean currents; whether environmental change is directly attributable to human action or whether we're simply one of many factors is largely immaterial; it's still in our best interest to minimize this.

While it's true that the entire process of building and operating a nuclear power plant does cause environmental damage, even the worst case scenario only impacts a relatively small area (in terms of the earth at least). The potential 'fallout' (lol i see wut u did there) from disrupting ocean currents may well be a global catastrophe.

Japan's nuclear plant didn't do so well during that tsunami.

I don't know what the impact of the ocean turbines would be, good point.
