Drug Use vs. Drug Abuse: What Distinguishes One From the Other?

Drug Abuse

I use drugs.

I wouldn't even call it drug abuse unless it results in addiction or overdose.

I'm not addicted to anything. I haven't done any type of drug for over a week (weed) and haven't done any hard drugs since Ultra Fest.

Drug use is what humans do for various reasons. But drug abuse is when a human becomes far too dependent on something, where they end up needing it just to avoid horrible feelings or consequences (same can be said for authority dependence... lulz).

I haven't done any type of drug for over a week (weed)

I don't understand what you mean by this. Why is "weed" in brackets? Are you saying that you move on to another drug each week, or you've never gone on a binge for over a week - with weed being the one that you did use for a week?

haven't done any hard drugs since Ultra Fest.

Wasn't that like two months ago?

That meant that I included weed in the amount of drugs I haven't done in over week.

And that's because I've only smoked weed since Ultra Fest. So really, I haven't smoked weed in over a week, and I haven't done anything else since Ultra (except alcohol or tobacco).

And yeah, it was two months ago. But to not do hard drugs in two months surely shows that I'm not an abuser.

I'd hope.

Where the drugs affects control you: you are in full knowledge that the negatives outweigh the positives, yet you use denial as an escape to maintain your addiction. When you get scared of a life without drugs. When drugs take precedence over all other things you care about, over your morality, your loved ones, and your own health & future.

Far too many people seem to think that drug abuse is what is happening if you use one substance which the all-knowing government has made illegal one time. This appears to be common amongst prohibitionists, people who think that nobody ought to use anything to change themselves.

I disagree. Drug use is the use of drugs in moderation (a concept which far too few prohibitionist-Christians seem to get, despite moderation being preached throughout the New Testament). Abuse comes into play when the drug is given an exalted status. More money than ought to be spent on the drug is being spent on the drug; the person using the drugs - and/or those in his milieu - suffers from the drug, and continues to use it - this is abuse, when it goes from fun and games to the losing of an eye.

All forms of drug use are drug abuse. Drug abuse can be addictive and it is harmful to your organs especially the brain. You shouldnt use drugs period. No questions asked.

Drug abuse is bad.

That's not the question. The question is, to paraphrase, what is the difference between drug use and drug abuse.

You shouldnt do drugs

Why not? What if I don't abuse them, just use them?

Does your "no questions asked" policy on refusing drugs also extend to refusing drugs offered up by medical professionals, drugs acquired through a prescription, drugs sold over the counter, and legal drugs like alcohol? All of those drugs also have the potential to be harmful to your organs and brain, sometimes more so than drugs of the illegal variety.

And I also think you missed the point of the debate.

sometimes more so than drugs of the illegal variety.

Such as hallucinogens:

"There is no evidence that any of the hallucinogens, even the very powerful semisynthetic LSD, causes damage to any human body organ. [...] Hallucinogens do not cause life-threatening changes in cardiovascular, renal, or hepatic function because they have little or no affinity for the biological receptors and targets that mediate vital vegetative functions."
