Yes it is the most spoken language for non-native speakers. It is third to Spanish and Chinese in terms of native speakers so this may change in the future. It is difficult to imagine Spanish as the global language (although it is much easier grammatically than English) due to it being predominantly spoken in poorer countries and Chinese is too unlike any other language for it to be learnt by the world. Not sure what you mean by global language. Russian astrophysicist Nikolai Kardashev created a model by which we can theorize a level of a civilization as a whole species by measuring the amount of energy consumption needed to sustain the technological advancements and growing population. It’s appropriately named the Kardashev Scale According to this scale, humans (albeit the only known intelligent life in existence) aren’t even a Level 1 Civilization yet, but we are close, some speculate even as close as 80 years. This does not seem utterly impossible if the current technological advancement continues in its trend of doubling every 18 to 24 months. Another physicist (and famous spokesman within the science community) Michio Kaku gives his take on the advancement (and possible demise) of our civilization and refers to the Kardashev Scale to illustrate his point of view. You can gather what you will from this. I am neither physicist nor linguistics expert, but I agree with Dr. Michio Kaku in his description of the English language as the beginnings of a Level 1 Civilization advancement. Side: YES

I am not completely sure what is meant by "Global Language". Does it mean, "Do the majority of the people in the world speak english as a native language?" Or does it mean, "How dominant is English compared to other languages in various parts in the world?" The first would be fairly simple to answer. It is just statistics. Chinese is the first ranked language in terms of native speakers, Spanish is the second, ENGLISH is the third. But this does not show how the language itself is dominant in the world. Chinese is the first because there are simply just more chinese children born. In terms of the second question, it is much harder to analyze and understand. By dominant it means how much of a presence does the language have in places around the world. By that definition, English is the 'Global Language'. Simply because if one were to travel to every country, town, city, village, etc., they would see that the majority have signs, ads, people speaking, etc. in the native language as well as English. English is just a powerful language in the world today. Side: YES

No. However it may be the best candidate. 3rd most first-language speakers, probably #1 in 2nd language speakers, most countries where it is either the official language, a formal associate language, most heavily spoken or spoken by an affluent minority. And it is spoken by significant communities on every continent. But there is no global language currently. But someday it quite well could become one. Side: NO
