Egyptian Parliament considers outlawing atheism

Egyptian Parliament considers outlawing atheism-

It may soon be a criminal offense to be an atheist in Egypt.

Shortly before New Year’s Day, the Egyptian Parliament considered enacting a law that would make it illegal to profess no belief in God. It is already against Egyptian law to “insult” or “defame” religion, and blasphemy arrests are on the rise. A conviction can bring up to five years in prison.
The new measure would criminalize the act of not believing in God — no insults or defamation of another faith required.

Christian tolerance and its message of peace has been the main reason why so many ethnic groups and diverse cultures can exist side by side in comparative harmony in America.

It's worth noting that Christianity came with a message of peace, which it never achieved, and Islam came unashamedly with sword in hand.

Sooner or later people will rebel against any religion which is based on fanaticism, repression and bigotry.

Egypt can do what Egypt wants to do. That's self determination of a group of people. I don't agree with them, but then again I'm not Egyptian.

Realize though that there are Christians in the USA who would like to outlaw atheism as well, and that runs contrary to Constitutional freedoms.

Can't agree with you on this one.

Egypt is part of the international community and should be conscious of its commitments and responsibilities towards promoting international, as well as domestic religious and racial harmony.

It was decent, but indifferent people like you who turned their back to what was happening to the Jewish community in pre-war Nazi Germany who were guilty of culpable negligence in the horrendous murder of six million Jewish men, women and children.

Consider the message in Martin Niemoller's exemplum;-

First they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out because I am not a socialist.

Then they came for the trade unionists , and I did not speak out as I am not a trade unionist.

Then they came for the Jews and I did not speak out, because I am not a Jew.

Then they came for me,--- but there was no one left to speak for me.

Intolerance and prejudice, in all its forms must be confronted immediately wherever it raises its ugly head before it becomes an inhuman, uncontrollable monster.

Valid points.

But yet if a Muslim nation (or some other religion) considers the American way of life a horrible affront to god's will we consider it wrong they try to impose their beliefs on our way of life.

And stop me if I'm wrong (I might be) but isn't Martin Niemoller's exemplum based on you being a part of that society which is gradually abusing the other parts of it? It doesn't sound like the context is from a foreigner looking in.

And finally, if this is about international community then isn't the way I vote locally as an American for my own government and it's foreign affairs the legitimate way in which I oppose backward foreign governments doing these abusive things?

Well, the Egyptians always were a little bit crazy. You should go and join them, bronto. You'd fit right in. And you wouldn't even have to stop lecturing us about the benefits of free speech you get in America if you are a pro-Jewish, anti-Muslim, right wing, war loving rapist.

That tends to happen to countries where Obama tried to replace their regime with an Islamic terrorist regime.

I can’t think of anything that would cause more regressive behaviours than outlawing thinking. If countries want their religion to be honoured, and their citizens to be protected from dangerous thinking, they should outlaw stupidity. But then they would have to worry about getting arrested on the way home.

Confirmation that Brontoraptor really is the theocratic fascist we all already thought he was.
