I wish the choices were should there be Ethics should be in business and Ethics don't belong in business.

For the most part ethics aren't a part of business anymore, but they should be. Recently I read an article about business ethics and it pretty much said there is no ethics in business anymore. Greed is the number one objective in business today and people are expendable.

I agree with thewayitis, that ethics should be in business and about the sides being retitled.

All I'd like to add is that ethics and business can work, ethics and capitalism, can not.

As the previous two replies say, I agree that ethics SHOULD be practiced in business, however, they are not by choice, in many cases. Costco, is a corporation that does not shirk social responsibility and practices some semblance of ethics, and the corporation is doing quite well. So, we know that ethics are not bad for business.

What I often laugh about when hear billionaire CEOs and aristocrats complain about regulation or repeating the centuries-old mantra of "we do not legislate morality," I often think, "if you had some semblance of ethics, there wouldn't be the need to regulate you." If there weren't corporations having six year olds working in coal mines, we wouldn't have needed child labor laws. So, if the corporate entities want to complain about regulations being imposed on them, they should look in the mirror for someone to blame. Rules were made out of necessity.

The government is needed in some areas. Remember 2008? Those guys weren't ethical. I still believe in the free market though.

I assert that to succeed in the rat race you have to be a rat. The secret to success in business is to know that there is no secret. However, here are a few congenital character traits which would be helpful;- Ambition, ability, a insatiable greed for money, the conscience of a psychopath, the ethics of a dirty rotten, two faced, back stabbing low life scoundrel, never give a sucker a break, be conscious that everyone, including your entire workforce and customer base would steal the eye out of your head given just half a chance, keep your employees on their toes by having them looking over their shoulder to see who's after their job, don't be shy, ask plenty for your merchandise and/or services, ''stealthily'' blacken the name of your competition at every opportunity, always remember, money, not love makes the world go around, always be first in with a bribe as the first to bribe will receive the contract. If you don't believe me ask any banker.
