Never thought I’d have to choose one over the other. My library is filled with both as I'm sure many others can admit to. Some are even combinations of the two. Star Wars, I mean yes its advanced technology, but sword fights in the future? And who will deny that the Force isn’t a type of magic of sorts. Swords and sorcery, just with space ships and aliens.

It’s a hard choice to be honest. I like aspects of both genres. Fantasy seems like purely fiction whereas science fiction at least seems like it could be plausible in most cases given time or location. Still, I’ll go with fantasy, something about the idea of the supernatural being a real thing appeals to me, like necromancy, calling lighting, summoning a demon, psionic manipulation or shape shifting into a wolf hybrid. That, and dragons are pretty cool.

Come to think of it. Dragonriders of Pern comes to mind as another sci-fi and fantasy combo, it’s certainly sci-fi but it seems like fantasy being that it’s pre-industrial and has creatures resembling earthly fantasy lore. I heard they may be making a movie, I hope they don’t cater to the contemporary audience too much, god knows we don’t need a Dragonriders of Pern version of Trueblood.

I truly do like both SciFi and Fantasy genres (my only other favorite is fiction in general). However, when forced to choose one or the other, I have to consider what is what. Science fiction is just... science. Applied to fictional stories. Meaning that while it's cool because it technically could be true, it doesn't take any more imagination than fiction, and it has boundaries.

Fantasy, on the other hand, has no limit other than your imagination. And think, in a world where imagination is becoming watered-down and scorned, what more should we need than books to stretch imaginations? After all, people are caring less and less about thoughts and ideas. So if people have fantasy books to read, maybe it'll help with that. Just trying to put this in perspective.
