Films should be made to escape reality and not to make us realize how hard life is.

This is how you make money with movies. If you want to entertain people this is the route you take.

Firstly a brief look at the particular reality of one individual. Brought up in the back streets of Belfast during the 40s and 50s with five siblings, making a total of eight in a small house where there was little money with which to buy food or clothes. Despite the hardship of extreme poverty this individual was quite happy as he and his family were adept at stealing food, as a means of staying alive, not for profit. On one occasion this youngster and his sister stole a turnip from the local grocers and due to their hunger, hacked pieces from it with an old hatchet in the yard and ate it raw with a bottle of mike they stole from a neighbour who was silly enough to leave it on the window sill. He went to school in ill fitting shoes which always had holes in them and walking on the edges of his feet when it was raining to avoid, as far as it was possible, stepping into the puddles was standard procedure. Toothache was such a permanent element of his life that he thought that it was a normal feature of living and from which there was no relief. What helped enormously to bring some hope and colour into this young boy's life were the many escapism movies, which he could see in the local cinema for the entrance price three empty, clean jam jars, as exemplified in Calamity Jane in which the captivating and glamorous Doris Day portrayed, in her surreal role, a glimmer of hope that maybe there was a better life to be had out there. Then if we skip many years when this individual resigned his position as general manager in Northern Ireland for a multi national firm of concrete manufactures and started his own company which, after some three years had a workforce of 35 full time employees along with ten trucks and numerous pieces of expensive plant. During the 30 plus years in business the proprietor had to find sufficient work for his 35 to 40 men, make certain the work was completed to a the required standard and then make sure he was paid by his clients. On top of this he had to carry a legally licensed personal protection weapon,(P.P.W.) due to the on going personal threats on his life, and the lives of his family, by the terrorist groups from both sides of the Northern Irish divide. During all these nightmare years, when he was able to put all his family successfully through university, he found a certain temporary solace in watching ''escapism movies'' where the good guys always won through in the end and the hero got the dame. The relaxing entertainment which such Hollywood productions made to the individual's harsh life was invaluable. Now, if you have read all this, which I doubt you will have done so, I hope you will recognise the pitiful drivel from 'thewayitis' or whatever his/her name is.

You obviously didn't read what I wrote. I clearly stated that we need escape films, just not all movies should be these escape films.

Ironically you wrote a non-escape script when writing your response.

The whole point of my script was to illustrate how escapism movies have a role to play as a form of recreation within the harshness of the 'dog eat dog' of life. That is providing one doesn't lose the ability to distinguish between reality and cloud cuckoo land. My interpretation of your post was that those people who watched romanticized escapism films were detached from reality. Anyway,s'nuff of all that, do have a thumbs up on me as a gesture of good will. Must go now, Batman and Captain America are coming round for breakfast.

I think most films do make us escape reality especially with all of the visual effects.

Side: So true

Most people either live in their own little word completely isolated from reality or are ignorant, uncompassionate things barely worth being called human. Life is hard and when people begin to recognize and accept this is reality, just maybe people will be willing to do something to make life a little easier. All films shouldn't be acts of fiction as we need to escape reality once in a while, but we also need a constant reminder that things like the WW ll holocaust did happen so we can make damn sure they don't happen again.

I concur. Whilst films are a nice medium for escapism from the drudgery of daily life there is a danger of such a medium becoming reality for some. This is especially important when you consider the overwhelming ignorance of many walking the streets in regard to crucial historical events and wider socio-cultural issues. Regretfully the admiration of books appears to be on the decline in popular culture in favour of film and television which, due to being instant, are to many easier to digest and synchronise with the modern attention span. So, in order to prevent these harsh truths from evanescing into obscurity, we must keep them alive by working in the most marketable fashion today; films like 12 Years a Slave and Schindler's List are films that will long abide in people's hearts because they brought the pain of our ancestors to the forefront and, as you said, serve as a constant reminder of how we as a society must behave to ameliorate the experiences of those around us.

One of the reasons why I love Bridget Jones' diary so much is because it is relatable. It doesn't depoct someone with a perfect life but the contrary and makes you feel better about yourself.
